Its not me! As I rarely drink!!

I'm talking an alcoholic as opposed to a bing drinker.

Doesn't it take a while to develop a true dependance - years even?

In UK it is legal to drink alcohol with a meal at 17 accompanied by an adult and you reach legal adulthood at 18, not 21 as in USA

Yes, i would say so. My brother in law ( ex actually.....that says it all ) was an alcoholic at 25.

Very sad waste of a PhD chemist, he went from a very decent job, house and wife. He lost it all, last known address was a social bedsit, since then he's disappeared. All in the space of 4 years.

Alcoholism is a disease, like any other disease in most respects, with a few oddities. While it is a physical disease, it is also a disease of the mind. The classic symptom of alcoholism is that a person drinks and when they drink it causes problems in their life. I know of at least a few alcoholics that were afflicted by age 10. Incidentally, it is not curable. By abstanance it can go into remission. Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic. The best known tool for alcoholics is Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The best way for a person to help an alcoholic is for the helper to join Al-Anon Family Groups (AFG). AA and/or AFG can be found in most any phone book in the white pages. Online: www.alcoholics-anonymous.org/ and www.al-anon.alateen.org/

Yes Definately possible. Most young people would deny having drinking problems but Binge drinking and a reliance on Alcohol are signs of it. If you cant control a habit then its addiction and it can start from the first time you drink smoke etc!

It is unfortunately possible to be an alcoholic at any age, in fact there are children born with foetal alcohol syndrome (I think that is the disorder) as their mother continued to drink through pregnancy. That is not to say that they themselves are alcoholic but the child, being fed through the umbilical, can become dependent for alcohol as a result.
Some people are alcoholic through personality traits (OCD amongst them) others begin to crave the chemical stimulus it provides, although the stimulus is to become erratic and lose inhibitions. This causes the mind to desire that effect.
The short answer is, they say, to avoid alcohol. The real answer is to enjoy in moderation, and realise that when it begins to affect not only you but your environment, maybe then it is time to look for other ways to achieve that stimulation.

Age is irrelevant. Anyone of any age can develop an alcohol dependency. They can be from any walk of life or background. All that is required is sufficient level of intake that the body struggles to cope without alcohol, sending the person into symptoms of withdrawal which causes them to crave more alcohol to take the withdrawal symptoms away.

If somebody asks themselves 'am I drinking too much' then it is likely they may become one. Plus, as rightly said by many people on here, people younger than 25 can, and are known to be, alcoholics.

I was worried you had been drinking the way you initially spelt 'years'!

yes my dad has been an alcoholic since he was 15. my advice quit as soon as u can. all it does is make ur life go to hell. and it realy does hurt the people around u too. especially if u are an angry drunk like my dad. and trust me u do not want to end up like him. he lives in a molding trailer next to my grandparents house, stealing money for beer. he even steals my money. SO QUIT NOW BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

It was at the age of 25 years old that I had my first "blackout" and determined that I was an alcoholic. Go to AA.

Alcoholism has no age requirements. You can be an alcoholic at any age. All it takes is to start drinking.
