the first key is not to spend too much. i don't know how old you are but i'd say $50 is the max if you're over 20. if you're still in high school then limit it to about $30. if you spend too much then you'll automatically look desperate.
the more thoughtful the gift the better. buy something that is exactly her style. ex. jewelry is very personal, so it must be to that person's taste. if you're her best friend then you should have an idea.
i would have to say to stick with any kind of personal item that she keeps around or can use everyday.

Why don't you make your wish come true and ask her how she feels about you? This will give you a better idea of what to get.
Italian Charm Bracelet, (it's not too expensive)and you could buy the first charm - something connected with her interests, a penguin, turtle,etc. Gradually, you can upgrade the charms as your friendship blooms.
Otherwise, take her to a place she enjoys or share a place you enjoy with her.

Why don't you want her to know you want to be her boyfriend? If you want to stay in the friendship mode, get her a bracelet or maybe some earings. That's always nice...Sometimes making a present means more to them because you actually took time and some thought involved to create it. Find a hobby or craft store and get creative!

If you want to date her, tell her the truth.
A gift will not do that.
That being said, get her something that says that you have been paying attention to what she likes and dislikes, don't go overboard with $ just be considerate and thoughtful and non-generic.

Get her something that she would find cute and sweet. Maybe a ring with her birth stone or something that you know that she absolutely loves. It would be ok to imply that you want her to be your gf because you want her to be and it might show her a quality that she likes in a man.
