Some people suggested gift certificates, but their mother would use them, so that is why I would rather get books.

My youngest son is 9 and he loves the Secrets of Droon series and Goosebumps. My oldest son is almost 13 and he liked Eldest, Inkheart , Inkspell, Artemis Fowl, and Eragon. There is a link below of a list of good books for that age range but you may want to think of a gift certficate. It's hard to know what they haven't already bought or read. It's best if you think of something the child really likes and look for something with that topic. My youngest loves tropical fish so I always look for something with neat pictures of underwater fish and my oldest likes stories about castles and knights and other fantasy stuff. If you go into barns and noble they can even help you find books for a particular interest and age range. They are great. Another suggestion would be games. There are some great brain-working games at the bookstores that many people don't think of. My oldest is currently hooked on Sudoko puzzels. I think books and games are a great gift! Good luck!

A good book for the both of them would be the Harry Potter Books. They are great in adventure and fantasy that would be good for little kids. That would help your kids education by making them better readers. Good Choice on giving them Books. Also instead, maybe give them gift cards for book stores and let them choose the books. Well that is what I would do.

There are a number of authors/publishers that offer Choose Your Own Adventure books. These are books that offer alternate choices and endings as the reader progresses through the story line. These would be especially good for kids that aren't really into reading, as chapters tend to be short and the action exciting.

Do they like Harry Potter? Any of the six books would be good. the seventh is coming out 07/07/07. Don't know if stores are accepting preorders yet.
You could also get them the Eragon book series. There are two or three in that series at least.

Harry Potter series, or the Eragon series, and if they aren't readers they'll recognize them from the movies and want to read the books. I think the Chronicles of Narnia are a bit dry, but you could try those. Then again you could go classic--Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, Moby Dick, Sherlock Holmes, Treasure Island, Peter Pan--all those traditional "boy" books my dad read when he was a kid.

The Hobbit or the Tolkien trilogy, or the Harry Potter series. If kids don't like to read, those kinds of books usually jump start them.

"Al Capone does my shirts"...excellent book...sorry forget the author right now.
But who knows what they have read in school already? Better give a gift card to a book store. That is more fun!

try lone star books if you are in texas for the 13 year old. also try mystery books. the nine year old would probably like a series of unfortunate events or a-z mysteries.
