When essential (i.e. for the survival of the individual organism), utility-related body parts are removed such as an arm or a leg, then you are handicapped. However, when relatively non-essential parts such as a single kidney or even mammaries are removed, then the person is not handicapped because that person's survival chances are not significantly minimized. Also, the body part removed is usually a visible one, so it is more likely to call a person with an arm removed handicapped than a person with a liver removed. Also, the loss of the body part, while minimizing the person's chances of survival, should not doom that person to immediate death, such as the case of the removal of the brain or heart; the handicapped person should continue living.

If the body part is an arm, leg, thumb, or big toe, then it could qualify as a handicap. Internal organs do not. You may be disabled while healing, but eventually you will fully recover.
It has to be a part that will diminish your capability as compared to the average person.
But I know of many people with missing limbs who are still 99% as capable as those with all their limbs. Sometimes being handicapped is because you have succombed to a helpless state of mind. Other times, it is absolutely an impairment.
