The lower back doesn't stretch a lot over time. even if you gain a lot of weight, the lower back is not going to change too much so the tattoo will continue to look good.

Sleeves on the other hand have a lot more factors involved. Any weight change can change the look of a sleeve dramatically. If you go out into the sun a lot, the colors will fade. Most tattoo artists won't tat on elbows. You don't have to worry about any of these factors with a back tat.

Also, many girls find this more feminine than sleeves. Not many women (even ones who enjoy tats) want full sleeves on their wedding day.

I think it's just a popular spot. It's flat, it's not an area that stretches a lot, and it can be hidden if it needs to be. That's why I think people get tattoos on the lower back.

I do not have a tattoo there, but I have 6 others and I don't think ANY of them are trashy. (right hip, ankle, back of thighs, and inner bicep) I could care less what other people think. I got my tattoos because I like them. I'm not worried about not getting a job either. I happen to be working on a bachelor's degree in psychology and I will continue on to get a Master's degree after that.

Tattoos should have nothing to do with your status in the workplace, unfortunately, right now, they do-so tattoos in areas that can be hidden-like the lower back-are popular.

In my own personal opinion, I think that a tatt on the lower back is a great place. It can be hidden if needed and can be shown off when wanted. I'm just tired of seeing the same old things tattooed there. Tribals, butterflies, faeries, hearts and roses..bleh. While most of them are really nice, they are cliche and overdone. I have a tatt in the middle of my back..right between the shoulder blades. Itsa big one too. I can cover it for work and my summer tanks show it off. I love sleeves on a woman. I planned on them myself. I wanted to have 3/4 sleeves so I could still cover them if needed. But in the end, hubby said I had to stop at mid upper arm. I will respect that. So am sleeving my calves instead..hehe

i think simmer has her ears pierced, wouldn't that be "marking the body, etc."? don't listen.

anyway, lower back tattoos are good and bad. they aren't original anymore, but the skin really doesn't go anywhere. as for sleeves, if i had the opportunity, totally! but my job would frown (police station, short sleeved uniforms). i love the idea. as long as a person has thought long and hard about their choice, who are we to criticize!? I'm getting wings (big freakin ones!) and my hubby loves it. it's my decision, so why not. if i regret it, then it's my fault.

why do people associate tattoos with trashy? i have 2 and i am getting my bachelor's degree very soon. I'm educated and professional...tattoos don't neccessarily mean you're "dirty" it's a matter of self expression. I have one on my lower back and i can cover it up with clothing anytime...not because i want to, but because there are ignorant people in the world who think of it as "nasty" and won't accept the every changing culture of the modern society.

i have one on my lower back. i'm thinking of getting another somewhere else. yeah i like full sleeves too, but im going to college to be a teacher. probably would not look too good in the grown up world. you have to think about these things when you make a dcision to place something on your body thats gonna be there forever. i try to get mine where i can hide them. besides i don't get tattoos to show off to others. i get them because i like them.

don't listen to everyone who tells you they are nasty. i think tattoos can be a great form of self expression. it's your body. if you want to dress it up with your favorite art that's your choice.

I don't know. Fad? Maybe they really like it. The only reason I would ever consider a tattoo would be to disguise an ugly scar.

Lower back, neck, sleeves, most places are trashy and most people won't hire if you look trashy or cheap. Its a huge fad. I think its stupid and what if you don't like it in 5 years when you get a little older and find out that its not accepted in the grown up world. Its like with lip rings. Its distracting, dirty and trashy.

They think its sexy. I say to each his own when it comes to tats, that's what they're for anyway, to be yourself. But these girls should know that when they decide to have children that they can't have an epidural with a tat on their lower back
