Vets don't charge "astronomical" prices, nor monthly fees which you gladly pay for your cell phone, cable TV, etc.

Any cat can benefit from a vet visit and exam. You will get a prescription with that visit and then can buy the flea product wherever you wish.

There are some over-the-counter flea products, but just like all medications, price is usually a big indicator of the quality and effectiveness. Advantage and Frontline are two reliable and safe flea products. It usually a good idea to treat your cat for three consecutive months in order to completely eradicate a flea problem due to the life cycle of the flea. Cheaper products, namely Hartz, can cause serious reactions. The active ingredient (called a pyrethrin) is not as safe, and some cats will suffer reactions in the form of seizures and serious central nervous toxicity. Should your cat suffer a pyrethrin toxicity, immediately begin washing the flea product off and get to a veterinary clinic immediately.

I know the flea products can be very pricey. I've found that pet specialty stores, like PetsMart and Pet Supplies Plus have reasonable prices and you don't have to pay shipping from online shops. Good luck with your kitty.

Perscription flea meds can only be purchased either through your Vet or with their written prescription.
Certain flea meds that are safe for dogs are HIGHLY toxic to cats and can (and have) resulted in the deaths of many pets. Hartz is very specific - you can ONLY use it on dogs.
Revolution, Advantage and Frontline use the same chemical in both their cat and dog formulas - so you can use one on the other - which is great because a vial of Revolution that treats a 40-60Lb dog will treat all four of my cats at a fraction of the cost.

I've heard ok results about Biospot and Zodiac - but I wouldn't trust these products on my cats like I would Advantage. Advantage is put out by Bayer pharmacuticals - they have a much better reputation than "Bob's Cat Dip"

vets don't necessarily charge high prices. You can buy most meds online now even those needing a prescription. Either ask the vet for a free flea check and prescription which won't cost anything since they are not allowed to charge for a prescription. Then send the prescription to the company you are buying from. Personally I look at prices online then phone my vet who always matches the price I have found. Most vets will price match, you only have to ask them.
Below are some of the companies that I use.

you can buy products to 'treat' fleas anywhere but i don't recommend them - they may be cheaper but are waste of money. the products you buy from the vets work. i would'nt trust anything else!!!
