I was just in Calf., I had always thought I would want to live there but I was disappointed. It wasn't as beautiful as NY. I was only in San Francisco though - so I can't speak for the rest of Calf. I have been to Los Angeles and Hollywood in the past. And the people were really annoying. There were beggers and homeless EVERYWHERE. I'm not saying their not in NY, but you don't see them like you do there. In NY they get arrested. People couldn't drive there either. They honked all the time at each other - but drove really slow and it was always bumper to bumper no matter what time of the day it was. There was no "backway" to go. Whereas if you know your way around NY you can get around traffic. And the threat of earthquakes - you can move snow. It's harder to move an earthquake.

Well, New York is the obvious choice because I live here now. I spent 8 years on and off in the Bay Area and got sick of the pc-ness and identity politics. Though it was beautiful. Also was depressed that I didn't think I'd ever afford real estate, but actually New York is just as bad. I just felt like there was an overwhelming liberal sanctimoniousness in San Fran that there isn't in New York. And I am a liberal, but I don't want to be around liberals who think they are superior to everyone and know better than anyone else what is right. Also I love the anonymity of New York and the gritty edge (though that has softened a lot and is somewhat disappointing.) I also moved back east partly because my brother lives here and at the time my Dad lived in New Jersey.

Neither.... Try Colorado or Texas. To live in either California or NY you better have sufficient rent funds or else live under an overpass or gang infested neighborhood. Of the two, rent the basement of any overpass: free and safer. Seriously if push comes to shove I would take California over NY--in fact I live in California but on my way out to Texas. I did live in Colorado Springs---personally, very nice. Good luck!

California: Pacific Ocean, Mountains, Great year round weather for the most part. California and NY have lots of pluses in common, but these are some important things to me that make my preference California.

With oceans on the upward push, i will stay interior the Midwest so at the same time as the left coast stops on the Rockies, and the right coast will be someplace around the Ohio/Pennsylvania state line, i'd have a shorter force to the sea shore.

New York, I hate beaches and I like the city. Hot weather never did much for me either...

CA. Much better weather. Better food quality too, at least in the Bay Area.
