I've read that less British people are visiting America, particularly Florida. Why is this? Over zealous customs and security at airports, perhaps? Is flying more trouble than it is worth?

BIG D - you could at least have made some attempt to answer the question.

America isn't 'cool' in Britain at the moment. Holidays are largely a matter of fashion and the current anti-american trend in Britain mean that people are more inclined to to elsewhere.

The security checks and things don't help either. They make you feel like a criminal and very un-welcome. If the Yanks don't want us there, we should stay away.

They are worried that we all want to come and live in their country illegally..... you couldn't pay me enough!

It's the security - which is always a bit crappy anyway, but now it's worse. A friend of mine flew to the states a few months back and had to go so far as taking her shoes off - not because some scanner beeped - everone had to do it. You can't carry enough hand luggage anymore, so what do you put in the hold - your handbag/purse or your laptop? Either way, you ain't gonna see that thing again. For a while the only liquid you could carry on was baby's milk/formula and then only if you had a baby too - the parent had to taste the milk in front of security in case it was explosives.

We understand WHY the authorities are doing this, but the net result is that a lot of brits just don't want to take the pain - There are other places to go on holiday.

America is too much like a bully now a days when it comes to Homeland Security. Yes, it's important but the British don't like inconveniences.

Bullishness really makes the British psst off! They are ultra-decent people and like to be treated as such. Then they hate American foreign policy and so on. It is a host of problems.

The Customs check's are unbelievable - Why woud they be harrassing a plane load of Glaswegians on a wee 2 week break to Disney Land...who have already been checked out.. and the law in Florida - that allows Floridians to have a pop at you with a gun ..understandably everyone is itchy about terrorists..but paranoia is creeping in..

Yes the customs guys are very off putting. Was hassled by an obese irate custom official for 20 minutes as I completed my landing card in upper case (rather than lower case) letters. Also, your country is too military and bully-like in their foreign policies.

Well it's just that americais represented by George Bush. This is the guy who represents you on the world stage, and his unpopularity is rubbing off on your nation as a whole. It is actually ignorance amoungst the rest of the world who don't know that there are a great many americans who are nothing like bush.

Is it? I hadn't heard that, however my own experience (as a white, middle class male) seem to indicate, to me, that US customs are getting more and more zealous.
People have told me to avoid flying to Washington Dulles, if at all possible... customs there is staffed by rednecks with the intelligence of a dead ant.
