I would buy the used car because then you won't have to pay the interest on the other $11,000 you would borrow. If you have or know a mechanic you could have him or her have a look at the used car before you bought it to make sure it is in o.k. shape. Sometimes when you buy a new car it can be a "lemon" as well. I guess it also depends on why you want a car. If it is for transportation, get the used one. If it is to "show off" then the new one will probably make you happier. I've never bought a new car but also have money invested making more money on the money I've saved NOT buying new cars.

Well, it depends on the "junker"!! Do you mean Junker in the sense of (lets say) an 89 corolla? lmao. Or a junker like a classic car that can build value instead of losing it like a new car?
If it is a classic in running condition, buy it! Theres nothing like owning a classic, that will GAIN value (trust me i know!).
But if its not, get a new car, just be wary-all new cars lose value as soon as they drive off that lot. So choose wisely! (trust me, I know that one too....)
Enjoy!
Hope this helps! (go with what YOU think is best)

Wow. $3000 is a junker? I got mine for $600. It's cost me ten times that in repairs and insurance over the 1.5 years I've had it though.

Down payment. Made that mistake several times. The $3000 car is going to cost you more than $3000, it never fails!

What about a compromise, don't spend 14K on a car, but spend 7-8K on a better, newer used car.

I'd buy the used one. In 5 years, even if you replace everything on it, you'll still spend less than the $11,000.00 difference, plus about $2,500 in interest charges.
