It's a defensive stance, but it's not disrespectful. I have no idea where your mom got that one from. Maybe she interpreted it as defiance. Sometimes we just cross our arms because it feels comfortable.

No, not always. It depends on other cues your body is giving off, like posture and stance. If you are standing erect with your chin lifted up and your arms croassed, that is seen as an agressive, disrespectful sign. But if your shoulders are hunched and your neck is tucked in, it's actually more of a defeated, subserviant posture. If it's more of a "hugging" type of crossed arms, it just be a sign that the room is cold!

To some people it means that you are not interested in what they are saying. But for me if i'm standing a lot crossing my arms helps me keep my balance and has noting to do with being disrespectful. And i'm in my late 20's.

But to a lot of people it means that you don't want to be approachable and that you are not listenting to them.

Here is a article that talks about having your arm's crossed and they have studies to prove it accross the states.

Yes, generally speaking. It is a type of a closed stance. Closed is meaning UNwelcome. It is nonverbal communitation that you are upset, annoyed, bored, etc. This is especially true if it is coupled with a negative facial expression. Crossed-arms with a frown and angry eyebrows indicates anger and resentment. Crossed-arns with a frown and rolling eyes indicates annoyance and irritation. Crossed arms with a smile, etc., most likely indicates the person is feeling chilly.

No, but in general body language terms, it often means you've stopped listening.

HOWEVER, some people are just not comfortable letting their arms hang, and do it when they are focused on something. Or when they are cold.

But next time your mom talks at you, or you are meeting their friends or something of the like, try clasping your hands in front of you. More respectful, your arms don't hang, and gets mom off your case, eh?

Crossing one's arms is a defensive gesture that people often show when they are verbally defending themselves in an argument with someone.

It is simply an expression of feelings. And most people are not even aware that they are communicating something to others with this gesture.

When you are crossing your arms, then your mother understands that you are not accepting her words. And perhaps this lack of acceptance is what she finds disrespectful.

no, I cross my arms because I don't want my arms hanging to the side while I sit down. Its just comfortable.

It's not disrespectful.

I usually do it either because it's more comfortable, but also when I'm actually interested in what the other person is saying.

No, sometimes people cross their arms because they are cold or just to get comfortable.

No. Sometimes my back hurts and crossing my arms helps relieve it. Or I might be cold.
