You don't want the ones on eBay. Those are leftovers that they can't sell locally.

In SF there's an outfit called Crown Vic sales. They ONLY sell ex government/police fleet vehicles, 99.9% Crown Vics or the Mercury Grand Maquis (same thing). Some even have leather seats! For $10000 you get a vehicle that has right about 30K miles, 2003's or 2004's, within the warranty period. And usually has the heavy duty mods like police package.

The trick is get a city fleet vehicle or a regular UC or supervisor car, as the other guy said.

The idea that cop cars are driven hard isn't always true. Cops don't go on as much high speed pursuits nowadays, too much liability insurance. Even so, cop cars have police package which includes tranny coolers, heavy duty radiators, stiffer springs and shocks, and so on.

I personally wouldnt buy a used crown victoria that I know to be a former police car because it will have a lot of miles on it and you know it will have been driven very hard in pursuits, etc. Thats why police cars usually get replaced after about 2 or 3 years.

Except for the plastic intake they are very reliable. The plastic intake was subject of a recall and could be replaced free of charge up to March 2006. So ask the owner if he got the replacement before you buy. If he did you will get one of the most reliable vehicles sold in the US.

Again, why do you think all the taxis and police cars are Crown Vics?

The Crown Vic and Merc Grand Marque are bullet proof .. that is why they are used for NYC taxis and police cars..The improved the plastic intake in I think 1998 and the 2001+ are greatly improved.. you can buy them used for 35% of their original price.. that said .. there are lots of great used ones out there that were owned by easy driving old folks that maintained them well.. don't buy a rode hard and put away wet police car.

Just watch out. My friend had a 1996 Crown Vic and at 80,000 miles that intake cracked and he got antifreeze in all the places it shouldnt be.

they are reliable thats why everyone uses them as fleet cars. im looking into getting a used police car too. my dad who works in the garage says to get a sargent's car or higher, or the unmarked police cars because those are generally driven less and not as abused.

You'll need to watch out at about 80K to 100K for a plastic part on the intake manifold breaking apart. $250.00 to $350.00 to fix
Also rear end collisions can result in fire. (high speed)
