OK 6 hours later, whole new group of people, here we go:
Time to rotate out the old spices and levening agents. What is the oldest thing you have found in that spice rack or pantry?

I found a box of currants full of bugs while making Stollen, it was crawling. For the spices I have been trying to replace the ones I know are old. I buy spices in bulk from the Whole Foods. That way I buy what I need and don't have to throw a whole bottle of spice away.

I refresh my spice/herb rack fairly often because I don't like any of them to be over 2 years old, but at Thanksgiving I found a six year old box of Bell's Seasoning, and I USED IT.

I 'usually' replenish them once a year in Jan. (after the holidays, DUH) with the batteries for the smoke alarm... but I found a box of baking soda waaay back in the fridge that's been there since I moved in 7 yrs ago EEEK.
Not doing this for the points, but if this helps anyone -- yesterday I read in Better Homes & Gardens (Dec issue - McCormick page):
"If you see 'Baltimore, MD' on the label, the spice is at least 15 years old.
Except for black pepper, McCormick spices in rectangular tins are at least 15 years old.
Go to www.mccormick.com/freshflavor for more tips and ways to tell if your spicees are past their prime."
I'm done. LOL

I have a can of cream of tartar that came from my sister. She got it second hand from my uncle. He got it out of my grandma's house when she died. It is a huge rock and completely unusable. It's probably about 20 years old.
