well, after working at the belvidere plant that they were built at, I would honestly not trust them any further than I could throw them. The auto trans was an unreliable piece of junk, the manual wore out the synchro's quickly and the clutch slipped, and worst of all, it's front wheel drive.

Neons are not a bad car. Like all makes they too have there issues. Even the infamous toyota corolla. One of the main problems the neons did have is the head gasket blowing out. That issue was in fact resolved.
Basically the 2001 and newer models have very good reliability ratings. The previous years had engine problems. Head gasket issue.
It really comes down to how well you take care of the car. Some people tend to think that by getting cheap wal wart oil changes there car will last forever. Not true. Cheaper parts will only make the car wear earlier.
As for the corolla fanatics if you take a close look at reliability ratings the neon has the same as the corolla. Oh and by the way the corolla had engine issues all the way to 2003. So no car maker is that great as people believe.
Best bet go to the msn autos site i put the link in for. See for yourself what you like.
To all the others I am not a die hard fan of any make. All the car companies have made mistakes and sold bad products. Fact of life. To be honest I have worked for chevy, honda, toyota, and independant garage. So I have seen the issues with quite a few of the makes.

Neons are not that bad, and if they're taken care of will last a long time. The truth is that no car is 100 percent reliable, it's just that some are more expensive to fix than others. The Corolla is nice, but they have their issues as well. I drove a Neon as a rental car and they're quite roomy, but they are a bit outdated. The Corollas I've been in are a bit cramped, but Toyota has a better reputation than Chrysler does. Even Toyota's quality has been slipping as of late.

I'll bet that at least half of you nimrods have never even ridden in a Neon OR a Corolla, but you mouth off as if you personally invented both of them. I have a Neon with 90,000 reliable miles on it. The paint is fine, the automatic transmission is fine, the head gasket is fine, everything's fine. It is a 98, and it gets 30 miles per gallon. It's not the most well-build car ever, but it's cheap to run and I have no intention of getting rid of it until it starts giving me trouble. Even if I need to start fixing it, the thing would have to be costing me quite a bit of money every single month before I could rationalize getting rid of it and strapping in for another four or more years of monster payments. My daughter has a 2006 Corolla, and it's gone through two sets of front brakes within two years, but is otherwise reliable.

Yes, they are reliable and mine, I've had very little trouble with it the 6 years I've had it. It gets good fuel mileage, and I don't plan on getting rid if it because it has been good to me. I've only had one problem with it so far and the problem was fixed a long time ago. I've only had to replace one head gasket the whole time I've had it so I'd say, from my experience, that the Dodge Neon is very reliable. It has plenty of horsepower to suit and is economical and reliable to boot.
The Toyota Carolla is a nice car, too. The Toyota Carolla is reliable but doesn't have the power a Dodge Neon has. The Toyota Carolla may get a little bit better fuel economy (32mpg to 36mpg) but if you want a car with power, good fuel mileage(30mpg to 32mpg average) and affordable car insurance, get a Dodge Neon.
From my experience and preference I'd go with the Dodge Neon. Also go to www.carfax.com and that should help you select the best car you can because it gives the car's individual history given you have the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Another good website that would give you an idea as to which one you prefer is http://auto.yahoo.com/. Some other good websites to visit are www.cars.com & www.kelleybluebook.com.

I have (have had) four Neons, '95, '01,'02 and '05 - all bought new. None have been troublesome. Neons are a cult car - you either love them or hate them. The Neon is positively known for its spacious interior, braking, handling and lower purchase price. The Neon negatively (despite my personal testimonial to the contrary) is known for its middling mileage and unreliability. So take your pick on what the truth is. The Toyota Corolla is an excellent car, (economical and reliable) but does not have the performance of a Neon. As with all makes of cars, previous owner maintenance is the most important factor in getting a good used car.

if you get a second generation neon (2000+)you should be ok. much better build quality and a nicer car. i had an auto 2000 neon. i bought it with 71k mi on it an did not have 1 mechanical problem for the year i owned it. the breakes are pretty good because of its weight, the stock sound system ist half bad, and the seats are comfortable. just dont pay more than the kelly blue book, and it does feel more powerful than the corolla in the higher rpms.

My sister bought a brand new Neon and that 1st week she had it, the brakes went out. Not Good. After that, the car slowly started to fall apart. By the time she got rid of it, it was only 3 years old and the paint was peeling (factory mixed it wrong or something) the front bumper had to be held in place with a bungee cord because the brackets that originally held it in place, broke loose. It just fell off as she was driving down the road. Neon's suck. Do yourself a favor and go with the Corolla.

If you had to get an older neon stay away from the 1997. If you had to choose between a Toyota or a Dodge, get the Toyota. The engines are better and they get better gas mileage
