The best way to find out more info is to go the website for the aifline you are flying.
As an example, if you are flying American Airlines, go to:
http://www.aa.com.
United airlines is www.ual.com
Each airline has slightly different rules concerning luggage and how much you can take on board.
There are also new regualtions concerning liuids and gels in carry on luggage. The best way for that is find that on the airline site also,

It varies a bit by airline, but if you are a female, you can bring a purse, and a carry on, then generally you can bring two bags weighing less than 75lbs a piece. Any additional luggage, and you have to pay for it. Bring gum to chew, and relax. It's really not scary. I've made 4 trips across the pacific, and been cross country numerous times, in all kinds of comercial planes. The scariest part is takeoff, but its a fun scary- like a roller coaster.

Rules- don't look suspicious or else they'll search you. Fo' real. My dad has a beard and he has always been searched every single stingking time. So shave your beard ( haha I'm joking!). Basically, luggage is this- one carry on per person, and then all the luggage you can goes in the bottom of the plane (cargo). Bring some water and gum so your ears don't pop on the way up and then down. Basically, flying is scary in the beginning and really exciting and mucho fun. So have fun!

If you are intending to bring any liquids/gels such as make-up or toiletries in your carry-on luggage, they need to be in travel size containers of 3oz. or less and must all fit in one quart-size clear ziptop bag so they can be screened separately at security. You can find hundreds of travel sized items at http://www.AllTravelSizes.com . They even provide the required ziptop bag free with every order.
For more information on these restrictions check out http://www.tsa.gov

It varies by country, airline, and flight class. Check the website for the airline you're flying with: they will certainly have a link for Baggage or Luggage.
