General of the (Army, Air Force, Marines)
General
Lieutenant General
Major General
Brigadier General
Colonel
Lieutenant Colonel
Major
Captain
First Lieutenant
Second Lieutenant
Those are the ranks of commissioned officers for the Army, Air Force, and Marines. The Navy ranks are quite different and I'm less familiar with them.
There are warrant officers who are higher up than NCOs (non-commissioned officers), but not as high as the officers listed above. I believe there are four ranks of warrant officers (maybe 5). CWO4, CWO3, CWO2, CWO1 (CWO = chief warrant officer).
The NCOs:
Sergeant Major of the Army
Command Sergeant Major
Sergeant Major
all of these above are the same pay grade (E9)
First Sergeant (E8)
Master Sergeant (E8)
Platoon Sergeant (E7)
Sergeant First Class (E7)
Staff Sergeant (E6)
Sergeant (E5)
Corporal (E4)
Corporal and Specialist are both E4s, but Corporal is more of a leadership position and is considered a junior NCO, whereas a specialist is not so much
lower enlisted:
Specialist (E4)
Private First Class (E3)
Private (E2) (one chevron for rank insignia)
Private (E1) (no rank insignia)
The officer and warrant officer ranks are pretty standard for the Army, Air Force, and Marines, but Navy is totally different. The NCO ranks I listed apply to the Army. The Marines and Air Force are similar for some, but different for others.

Private, Private First Class, Corporal or Specialist 4 (E-4), Sgt or Spec 5 (E-5), Staff Sgt or Spec 6 (E-6), Sgt First Class or Spec 7 (E-7), Master Sgt or Spec 8 (E-8), 1st Sgt. (am not sure current grade),Sgt Major (E-9), Warrant Officers 1,2,3,4, 2nd Lt (0-1), 1st Lt (0-2), Captain (0-3), Major (0-4), Lt. Col. (0-5), Col (0-6) Brigadair General 1 Star (0-7), Maj Gen 2-Stars (0-8), Lt General 3-Stars (0-9), General 4-Stars (0-10), General of the Armies 5-Star (Unfilled since Douglas McArthur) I think there have been 5.
There used to be a Spec-9 (E-9) but only 1 I believe! There may have been a change around the E-8 or E-9 Master Sgt, 1st Sgt, or Sgt Major grades or terminology. The Army in WWII had a Tech Sgt who had a T below their stripes! That is long gone!
Lateral stripes on left sleeve was 1 for each 4 active, and parallel stripes on Right sleeve each represented 6 months in combat or War zone! Worn on dress uniform or Blues!
Sorry, from the least to the highest Rank in the Army.

I wasn't going to answer at first as I saw 11 people had done it ,then I read the answers and was SHOCKED at the misspelling and general lack of completeness so here is my attempt - Commander in chief -POTUS, SECDEF, the individual Secretaries of each service ,the CJCOS,then each individual chief of staff now THE OFFICER CORPS - Gen. of the ARMY/AIR FORCE /MARINES 5 star cluster ( Omar Bradley was the last one and he died in the 1990's) General , 4 stars in a row/ Lt. Gen. 3 stars / Major Gen. 2 stars/ Brigadeer Gen. 1 star/ Colonel (eagle) Lt. Col ( silver maple leaf) Major (gold maple leaf) Captain (2 silver bars) 1st Lt (1 silver bar) 2nd Lt. (1 gold bar) Now the Warrant Officers (only ARMY has these anymore) Chief Warrant Officer 5 through 2 have a silver bar with the coresponding number of black squares.WO-1 is silver bar with 1 black square in the middle of the bar Now enlisted ranks SMA/CMSAF/SMMC are the Most senior individuals in the enlisted ranks and answer ONLY to their respective services chief of staff, Sergent Major of The Army, Cheif Master Sergent of the Air Force are all pay grade E-9 then you have the other E-9's Command Sgt Major ,Sergent Major ,E-8 First Sergent & Master Sergent ( Command Sergent Majors and 1st Sergents push troops while Sergent Majors and Master Sergents are admin) ,E-7 SFC sergent first class,E-6 Ssgt staff sergent,E-5 Sgt Sergent ,E-4 Corpral & Specialist (Corpral is NOT a junior NCO he IS AN NCO and faliure to obey is punishable under the UCMJ) Corpral pushes COMBAT ARMS TROOPS exculsivly where a Specialist is a technician and is in training to become an NCO . E-3 Pfc private first class (Lance corpral in the Marines) .E-2 Private (one stripe) E-1 private (no rank ensignia)
