One of my male friends came to visit this morning and gave me some money. I didn't open the envelope until he had left. When I saw how much it was ($50--a lot for me) I was shocked. Now I feel embarrassed and guilty for complaining about being broke. There is no ulterior motive behind this gift. The man is over 80 and has a beautiful young wife. He's always doing things to help people.

If you really need the money-thank him. Then, tell him when the chance comes, you will help someone out who needs some money. I did that once. And, I did help someone out, when I could afford it.

The situation is quite clear and so is his generosity.
Now... NEVER say "Oh you didnt have to"... He believes he made your day and, actually did!
If I were in your place I would do this:
Write him a beautiful Christmas card, wishing him all happiness and joys. Write it with your heart, he will know it... we always do when its for real, right. Send him a X-mas cake or those wonderful cookies that we can get the recipe at the epicurious.com. The thing here is that you made it yourself and didnt spend money, yet, you spent your time thinking of him. I bet its more precious than any other gift you could have thought. Time is precious.
Then, no matter what you do with the money, let him know how helpful it were for you at that specific moment.
Good luck and Merry Christmas!

Just graciously thank him. A note is especially nice. If you feel it is necessary to do more, make him a home-baked treat or hand-made scarf - something that costs more in effort than money, and give it to him along with your thank you note.
