You dont need to, as it does weather very very nice, also it is long lasting. However, in my experience, even with redwood, and any other hard woods, I have used a sealer to stave off the effects of weathering, especially if you want to keep the look to last longer. So its really up to you, but with cedar, you dont have to.

If its outside absolutely. It won't rot as fast as Doug Fir or Pine yet it will loose it nice color in about a year if left outside. Their are a ton of products that will work for outside use yet most transparent or semi-transparent sealer will last between 2-5 years depending on the weather and if it's a deck or siding.

If your using the Cedar inside, Tung Oil is usually the best. It will keep it from drying out and splitting. Polyurethane can be used also if you want a more durable inside finish.
