What does it mean when a guy cannot look you in the eyes?

I work with this guy who cannot seem to look me in the eyes when we talk. He seems really shy, but i am not sure why it is so hard for him to look me in the eyes. He is not like that with the others. Any advice?

there are many things that could mean

maybe it only means that he thinks you're pretty

maybe it's because you seem interested in him, and he's NOT interested (a wierd thing to imagine..)

maybe he has stolen from your purse before and can't look you in the eye

maybe he's overheard a conversation you had with someone on the phone, and felt like he was eavesdropping, but didn't find it in him to tell you

maybe you had spinach in your teeth once, and spit it onto him without realizing it

maybe you wear the same perfume as a girl he used to date

The one certainty is that he's nervous, for whatever reason. It could be just general nervousness he experiences when talking to someone (since he might feel insecure about his ability to come across well in the conversation). Like someone else said, if he's not married, there's a high likelihood that he likes you and doesn't want to screw it up. I have anxiety in conversations with people I don't know well or don't want to look dumb in front of, and my friends and wife poke fun at me because there's a stock list of behaviors I show. One of them is that I put my hand on the back of my neck or I scratch the back of my neck. Ear-pulling isn't far from that. I personally do look people straight in the eye even when I'm nervous, more as a way of overcoming the fear and to show I'm trying to connect; but many nervous/shy people don't or can't. It's hard to see oneself reflected in someone else's gaze, if you're already feeling insecure. If you can find a way to make things less direct or more casual (i.e., sitting down for coffee, or doing something together rather than a forced conversation), that might ease his discomfort. Talking about yourself (to take the pressure off him and giving him some information that he can react to) or asking him general questions about things he likes might help too.

Well...does this individual make eye contact with others? If so, maybe he is shy around you. If he doesn't, maybe he is shy in general. If he has other character flaws (ie makes a lot of false statements, changes his answers to same questions frequently) maybe he is indeed dishonest. But, I will give him the benefit of the doubt, since I do not know him and chalk it up to shyness. You did not state how long you and he have worked together. Who knows, maybe he will lighten up if he has not been there a long period of time yet.

He's not like the others? seems to me as if you have a crush on him. Okay.. that being said, him not looking you in the eyes doesn't necessarily mean that he has a crush on you too. You will have to look for more clues than that. Or perhaps.. just try the forward aproach.
