okay, well i used to have phenomonally great credit...but there has now been a few things.
first, i have a house i'm trying to sell and that's up there now..
but my question is there has been a mix up with a utility company that i had for service about 2 years ago. they are saying i owe them money and had sent it to a collection agency. i wasn't even living stateside for the time that the amount accumulated, and so i have tried disputing it. basically it's been in progress since october, and they are still sitting on it like fat chumps. i have contacted a lawyer about it and basically they have told me it's sitll in the company's time frame to handle my dispute so i can't do anything aobut it right now. how bad is it going to effect my credit and whatnot?? when i moved back to the states i had to go through credit chekcs for EVERYTHING and took a lot of hits b/c of them..so i'm becoming very nervous about loosing my good standings i had when it was 760. any suggestions??

First, yes dispute this. Also D/V any collection agency that contacts you. DO NOT speak to them, keep it all in writing, these people could care less if you really owe the money...they just want to be paid. Go to Creditboards.com and learn how to deal with this debt. There really isn't enough here to give you every detail. There people will answer you on each step. Good luck and don't worry to much, this will be settled

After getting your dispute settled I would go back and get new credit cards so you can get the lower APR. I would have the company who is currently messing up your account to make sure they tell all 3 credit bureaus to tag your credit report that you did not do anything wrong and that your credit should be reversed to before they damaged it. They can ahve any bad marks taken off your report and if they are in the wrong which it sounds like theya re then it should be removed. You should also get ahold of all 3 bureaus and dispute the marks on the report.

Disputing a utility bill is rather straight forward. You either lived there, signed for someone who did, or it will be removed.

Utility companies require a good bit of documentation, so I don't know how they got your SS# mixed.

I believe you should write to all credit reporting agencies. If you have awesome credit and nothing like this has ever happened before, they will probably take that into consideration and take it off your report. Something like that happened to me, and I disputed directly to Equifax and it is no longer there anymore.

Dispute the claim with the credit companies (TransUnion, Experian, Equifax).
