My son is twelve and had chemo for non hogkins lymphoma when he was 4.He is now begining to worry about whether or not he will be able to have children ( I know its sad as he's so young but he's been watching a documentry about infertility)
Has anyone had chemo in childhood or had children who have had chemo and gone on to have children?
I feel its a little early to discuss this with his oncologist and there would be no way of knowing yet anyway.

He was treated with cyclophosphomide,
doxyrubicin, methotrexate, and cytarabine but he had a reduced dose of cyclophosphomide as part of a trial.

At the end of the day we are just glad he is well and was treated succesfully but it helps to hear other peoples experiences good or bad.

Elena if you read the qustion you would see that he IS well now. Also that I said the reason he was wondering about having children was that he was watching a program about infertility.
What an unsensitive answer to a genuine question.

Chemotherapy can most certainly affect fertility. The best answer to give your son is that when is is older, he can have a test to determine whether or not he will be able to father children or not. The fact that he is wondering if he will be able to or not at this young age is touching. My bet is that whether or not he "fathers" his own children or not....he will be a great "dad"!

Those are some pretty powerful drugs. I would definitly dicuss this with his oncologist. I can say that my hubby did chemo for Hodgekins Lymphoma in 1997. We had one child at the time and went on to have 2 more.

My son, almost 5, finished chemo approx. 1 yr ago for a Wilms Tumor. He was treated with Doxyrubicin, Dactinomycin (also known as Actinomycin-D) and Adriamycin. He also had 6 rounds of radiation. We were told that he should not have a problem having children.

My cousin's daughter just gave birth to her first child. She underwent chemo and radiation for kidney cancer as a toddler. The doctor's weren't sure if she would be able to concieve. At least with a male, it's an easy enough test to find out if he is producing sperm and if they are motile. As he is probably just now going through puberty, he can talk to the doctor about his concern.

I had osteosarcoma while i became 5 and six my classes have been somewhat screwed up yet my GP isn't helpful if that became because of the chemo or kin heritage. i became advised my probabilities of having babies have been good and no person ever reported something to be approximately larger probabilities of disabled babies. i assume it relies upon on what treatments you had. the only concern i became advised became i does not have the skill to pass into complete labour because of the fact of harm to the guts because of the fact chemo. i'm undecided how plenty reality there is to that yet i assume a c-area isn't the tip of the international. I even have heard of maximum cancers survivors having young babies. pass communicate on your loved ones healthcare expert and discover out what medications you have been on and in the event that they could result your fertility. in case you have been in remission for a protracted time i could think of which you will have the skill to have a healthful baby.
