I fail to understand, isn't following your heart the most important factor in life? or is it better to 'give in' to the a set of rules 'just in case'?

Someone recently said "You are entitled to your own beliefs, but you are not entitled to your own facts." Even St Francis said that religion should not dispute worldly knowledge, at the risk of being deservedly ridiculed. Our present-day fundamentalists are embarassing proof that he was right about this - they continue to waste huge amounts of time and energy disputing the fact of evolution, for example (this might be a blessing in disguise since it distracts them from causing worse mischief in other ways).

Belief is what you need when you lack evidence yet still feel something. Okay, go ahead and believe, but don't be so foolish as to think you have any sort of absolute, perfect knowledge, because you *don't* - no one does.

Scientists don't "believe" in evolution; they simply accept it because of overwhelming evidence that it is real. It's also falsifiable if anyone can prove that in 150 years science has gotten it wrong somehow. Waving a Bible around and screaming at the top of your lungs that evolution is false just makes you look incredibly stupid, and ironically enough reveals some of your more apelike characteristics of emotionalism and irrationality.

As for believing "just in case" - are you kidding? Do you really think that if God is real s/he couldn't tell if you're faking it?!

If a person was perfect in all their judgements, then "following your heart" would have some importance. As it is, at a later time, we often come to regret having "followed our heart" .

Faith in God is misrepresented with the word ,"believe". The devil "believes" and it won't do him any good.
God wants us to "trust" Him enough that we will follow His directions. His desire is not that we should be His slaves but His desire is to GIVE us a good life now and eternal fellowship with Him later.

John 10:9-10
9 I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief (the devil) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
(from New International Version)

If you are talking about Christianity it is not just a bunch of rules. It is a relationship with Jesus. You grow to love Him and He in turn changes the desires of your heart. You can still live your life. What do you have so wonderful in your heart that you think He would change, usually it is nothing but selfish ambitions or sin.

You should believe in whatever you choose as long as you can live with it. If you stand for nothing then you will fall for anything. If you do happen to fall at least fall on your back so you can look up. Shake it off and then step up. If you continue with those motions then eventually the hole you dug for yourself will filled and you can then press forward in whatever belief you may choose. Choose wisely and don't be a fool.

Follow your heart but also consider the hearts of others. See the forest over the trees and you'll find the right path.

I do follow my heart, and my heart tells me that their is more to life then what we see. I don't need a book or a set of rules to believe in God, it's just a feeling I have that doesn't impede my life in the least bit, in fact it makes it meaningful and more clear. If following your heart leads you to believe in nothing, then that's your choice.

Denying religion because of the flaws in organized religion and the inconsitencies in the Bible (both are products of men, not God) is not thinking for yourself....it's just rebelling against the norm. You don't have to be a Christian to believe in God.

Follow your heart, yes. Believe in what you want to believe but do the right thing, break some rules learn from your mistakes, your question is kind of unclear, but just in case, so you don't burn for eternity in hell, feeling like your going to die every second but never do... Get a Bible! Jesus loves everyone and you don't have to be sober to love the lord, he will help you when your in trouble always. Trust him and he will do great things for you. Seiously Merry X-mas!

Some people need to believe in something greater than them. Does that make them weak? Yes, but it does not make them stupid or wrong.

Live your life the way you want. You are entitled to that and so are the bible thumpers.

Noone has solid proof one way or the other, so why judge?

Look you can spend your whole life trying to reason it out and still be no closer to a settlement,to step out in faith is a very courageous act and calls for a lot more backbone.
