If you don't have one of those handy dandy choppers, cut it under cold running water. Also light a match then blow it out. Hold the match between your teeth while cutting the onion. The sulphur in the match counteracts the smell and you can pretty much get through without crying.

Cut the onion in half and wrap each half in cellophane - store in the fridge up to two days - when you take it out to chop it will not make your eyes water. You can also store the onions in the fridge whole - but it works better if the onion is cut in half. Also, burn a candle next to your cutting board while chopping. It's the fumes that make your eyes water - so a candle or an open window will cut down on the fumes and make it easier on the eyes.

Here are a couple of ideas. The water trick usually works for me.
Peeling the onion under running water can help a little if the onion is really bothering your eyes

You could also try freezing the whole onion for about 20 minutes before you cut into it. That always works for me!

The tears are caused by juice squirting from the onion when chopped. Submerging will prevent the juices reaching you, whilst a sharp knife will lessen the amounts of juice as the onion gets 'squeezed' less. Or wear a scuba mask...

There are a couple of different things that work...

1. Soak the onions in ice water for 10 minutes before you start to cut them.

2. Stick a match in your mouth (unburnt) and just keep the wood between your teeth until you are finished... IT WORKS!!!

Light a candle or a burner on your stove next to the cutting board. The flame will burn off the vapors from the onion out of the air before they get to your eyes.

I saw on an episode of Take Home Chef, that chewing gum whilst cutting onions will prevent your eyes from watering.

the best way that works are either stick your tounge out or put a teaspoon in your mouth as the vapours from onions are naturally drawn towards moisture just like CS gas so if you can block the vapours before they get to your eyes then you are sorted.

You can buy chopped frozen onion in bags at Tesco's. Keep for ages, don't become slimy when you fry them and they make me fart less.

Everyone's a winner!
