A large number of aircraft flying in the same area are most likely on a training exercise of some sort. It is rare to use a large number of aircraft for a public emergency. If there is no news coverage, it must not be newsworthy, so it's probably an exercise.

Maybe Tiger Woods is playing at a local golf course. Since these helicopters are not painted in military colors, it isn't a military movement (one explanation of mass numbers). Helicopter maintenance is very expensive, many times helicopters are moved by flatbed trailers for delivery. Perhaps a movie is being filmed or it could be an airshow somewhere. In any event, that much aluminum in the sky would require government approval.

It could have been a holding point for an instrument approach to a local airport, which means that every incoming aircraft is going to fly a racetrack pattern in order to space it from other traffic, but this is not always required, and ATC probably allows planes to skip that hold when there is no other traffic.

US Coast guard helicopters are white with red diagonal stripes or red with white diagonal stripes. Type US coast guard helicopters in your search bar and select Images and see if that is what you saw.
