Whats your reason for seeing your example as a "moral downward spiral".
My answer-I would say between 1840 and 1929. Big Business Tycoons and then the Market Crash. But Im sure there are better answers than mine.

The moral code for society is the Bible. Once people get away from this (love the Lord with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself) then you get a self centered society that thinks only of its own pleasures.

That is what you see today whether it be pornography, alcohol and drug addiction, child abuse, materialism, etc. Once a society destroys itself from the inside, it will be easily conquered.

If you don't think America is turning upright values on its head just turn on the 6 O'clock news to see how many murders, thefts, and other destruction plague this country.

And people just hate the Bible. Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.

The basic answer to your question is - Has America ever really had clearly defined morals?

The country itself was established by criminals, and social rejects who clearly didn't break away from their bad (immoral) habits during the establishment of America.

But a more recent example of America's conflicting morality would be the the legal adoption of the death penalty to punish convicted criminals.

If "killing" (murder) is morally wrong and by law criminal then, it is still both immoral and criminal even when used as an act of retribution by the men upholding and administering the justice system.

If an individual citizen commits a killing or murder as an act of retribution, they are committing a crime according to the law.

Why should the men charged with upholding the laws be exempt from following them?

It began when we began to believe in situational ethics and teach our children to do what "feels good".

There are no right or wrong things now. Each one is taught to do what is right in their own eyes.....and then try to justify why their case should be looked as good. The curbs which used to keep people from running over other people are now gone. That curb was the Law of God.

Yeah it is but so is Europe too,for me it started since the law allowed abortion, the greatest act of criminality ever, and God help us because the fact is that the total decline of a nation is always preceded by it`s moral decline.

When God was taken out of the schools and other important parts of our lives.

When we remember that our Four Fathers based the new country on the Bible and the base of God's laws

Well take them away and there goes the country

now who are you to say it is a moral downward spiral. not everyone has the same morals as you, and many are starting to realize that morals do not exist in nature. we just create them because we feel our complex brains make us so special that we must be more than animals with complex brains.
