A spokesman for the Social Security Administration said the agency simply couldn't disclose the information to consumers because doing so would run afoul of federal law.
"That information is considered to be tax return information, and it's governed under the Internal Revenue code," said Social Security's Mark Lassiter. "There are strict limitations on disclosure. Can someone see if anyone else has reported earnings under their Social Security number? The answer would be no."
You can not even check SS to see if anyone else is using it for any reason or purpose. Its simply very wrong.Victimless crime my azz
Follow-up investigation revealed the same Social Security number had been used to obtain work at 37 other employers, mostly by illegal immigrants trying to satisfy government requirements to get a job.
MSNBC.com research and government reports suggest hundreds of thousands of American citizens are in the same spot -- unknowingly lending their identity to illegal immigrants so they can work. And while several government agencies and private corporations sometimes know whose Social Security numbers are being ripped off, they won't notify the victims. That is, until they come after the victims for back taxes or unpaid loans owed by the imposter.

It is only sad for Americans! I have been writing the "elected Class" ....I have a problem with the law that forbids the IRS & SS exchanging information and also with the law that says SS & IRS cannot notify an American if they get statements in from employers that shows someone else is using their SS number. These are both branches of the government being paid for by Americans yet they can't help us stop identity theft? One lady in DFW area finally found out 85 different people were using her SS number! These are 2 laws that need to be changed!

It's completely insane. There was a group of Mexican guys who used to sit around all day outside the office where I worked (I mean they literally sat there on the sidewalk) and harass every woman who walked by. They were waiting there for people who would drive by and offer them odd jobs. They spoke not a word of English and we were pretty sure they were illegal immgirants. One time one of them jumped up and tried to grab my friend's crotch so she called the police, but they scattered when they saw the car coming. I don't understand why she couldn't just have called INS and had them come pick them up, but she said her friend was a lawyer and he told her the INS wouldn't pick them up. I don't understand this. If you suspect someone is here illegally, why isn't there somewhere you can call and have them checked out? A couple days later they were back in their usual spot yelling obscene things at us in Spanish.

It is really bad but the pro illegals will continue to say that this is crap of an alarmist. They are criminals and there is nothing more that need be said except criminals deserve sentences.
For those who say the economy needs them you need to stop talking and start checking the facts. They cost us in so many ways it is almost unreal. Check out the Criminal effects, school effects, welfare(yes they us it with the fake SSN it is easy) medical cost, loss of tax revenue.

Thats very sad. And since the illegals get treated better than citizens, they don't even notify victims when their identies are stolen.
My favorite part of the article is when immigrant rights group say this is the inevitable outcome of unfair labor laws. Yeah right. Its everyone's fault except the illegals.

This is what a broken system produces.
If immigrants could get working papers, guess what, no more ID theft.
Nobody's trying to steal an ID, they are trying to get a job.
Remove the need for a SS# and you remove the need to steal one.
We can't have both. We stand our economy on the backs of "lower class" workers and tell them they are breaking the law for being the bottom rung.

While i agree that this is a sad story, and very unfortunate, i cannot help but sympathize with the desperation people feel and the basic human urge to provide for your family. These people scavenge to survive, they immigrated to this nation so that they would be able to keep their families healthy, not to purposely put others in debt. Therefore, i disagree that the ONLY solution to this problem is "REMOVAL" of these people as some ppl have commented, but rather approval of tax IDs for immigrants which would allow them to work without pushing them into HAVING to make one up or steal one. Also, i would like to add, that it is not only Mexican or "Spanish" people that do this, and while the majority are, you'd be surprised at the types of illegal immigrants there are in this country
