What DJ said. If you leave it wet and don't clean and re-oil it, the gun will rust and won't work any more. But if you clean and re-lubricate it, it should work fine.
If you own a handgun you really need to contact your local shooting-sports groups such as the NRA and hook up with a responsible adult who actually knows how to handle and care for a firearm and can train you. Ask at your local shooting range, they will be more than happy to help in order to promote SAFE gun ownership.
An imporoperly maintained firearm is a danger to you, and an improperly handled one is a danger to everyone around you including your family -- because it is not the gun that is dangerous per se, but the person holding it. Guns are designed to be able to kill people and wreck things. If you excercise the right to keep one you have the responsibility to do so in a safe manner, and that includes getting training in the proper storage, handling, maintaining, and use of it.
=== EDIT ===
Oh yeah, one other thing -- unless you are using military ammo or ammo specifically built with sealed primer pockets and case mouths, expect any ammo that was in the gun to be ruined by the water.

Your question is a valid concern. Alot of people just don't know. So don't feel bad. I've overheard gun instructors giving people info that was wrong either do to things changing over time or they just don't know themselves. So anyone who is heckling you just ignore them. Everything about how the gun itself will be fine is true, so long as you dry it when you get home.
If you are going to shoot it before you disassemble it, make sure you unload it and shake it out to remove any moisture from around the firing pin in the chamber or within the barrel. Also, depending on your weapon, you COULD have an electrical component besides something like a laser sight or flashlight. Some companies offer an electronic safety (such as requiring a special ring you wear) to make the weapon ready to fire. Also, if you were to include rifles (I know, you said handgun) Remington makes a rifle that is fired electronically. They call it the Etronix and it has no moving parts on the trigger housing. Squeezing the trigger is like clicking a button which sends a current to the firing pin. Good question.

Water or dirty water will not harm a gun of any type except black powder (while it is loaded only, powder will get wet an not burn). However water is a natural solvent to black powder hence this is what was used to clean one. Just make sure you clean and lubricate any gun you may own every other week even if you do not use it.

You won't hurt a handgun with a dunking. However if the weapon is equipped with some exotic laser sights or something of that nature there are batteries to consider. But regardless, a full disassemble, cleaning and lube should be all you need to return the gun to service.
I went on my butt in a river in Alaska and dunked my S&W mod 29. I fired it that afternoon before we went home.

My Dad was in the Marines and has been in law enforcement for like 20 years often used to clean his rifle in the washroom sink with hot water. He says they do it in the Marines all the time in the shower.
You can wash out a gun with water. It's not the best way in the world to clean it and you need to understand that, but as long as you displace the water and oil it it will not hurt it.

I typically take my computer contained in the lavatory at the same time as I actually have a bath so i am going to hear to music. I continuously get water on the keyboard in spite of the undeniable fact that it hasn't ever been damaged so it will be ok! merely wipe the keyboard and between the buttons to be danger-free

In Boot Camp they make you Shower with it (rifle) and Sleep with it.....They press the importance of your firearm and how much it means to your life. If it ever happens that you drop yours in water, clean it as soon as you can...Make sure the water is all out of it, and it is dry before oiling it.

Just clean it really good and oil it up. As long as you give it a regular maintenance and cleaning a good gun will last you for many years to come.

Just take the batteries out first otherwise they'll get wrecked and you'll have to go to Walmart and buy more...
Where would you get electricity in a handgun?....
Sounds like you need to get rid of the gun before you shoot yourself or worse me ...

As long as it were thouroughly cleaned and lubricated soon after, it would not be damaged.
Soldiers and hunters have their firearms in the rain all the time.
