My 7 year old son asked me this question earlier, and i havent got a clue what the answer is! I muttered something about being bored or needing a hobby, but i really need to find a decent answer for him. Ive tried looking it up on some sites, but Im not getting anywhere. Anyone know?

ive edited this to say to everyone who replied helpfully, thank you. To those of you who have jumped down my throat, i would say get a life. I am not disgusting nor do i ram any religion down my sons throat. i help him with all his homework, no matter what the subject, and when it comes to RE homework, i help him explore all faiths. Incidentally i am not a religious person, but i believe in teaching children about a wide variety of subjects, so that they can make up their own minds about things and not become narrow minded and judgemental like some of you here seem to be.

There is no such thing as god beyond a human need to feel that there is 'more than this' Explain to your son that while a belief in a higher being helps some, it it not the answer to all. When he is old enough, explain why some feel the need for belief of the spiritual kind while others base their understanding on scientific rationality. Neither is wrong in it's own context, it's just the way they can both be preached that causes problems.

Read some science books and tell him the truth. He is going to look pretty stupid at secondary school if he believes it was God thats for sure. All kids at secondary school know how the Earth was formed. They are growing up in a world where religion is losing its hold in many Western Countries. Many church's are not even half full these days and as time goes on more and more will close.

GOD didn't build this earth.

why is your 7 year old asking questions like that, shouldn't he be asking what is Santa bringing him for Xmas,

forcing god and Jesus on to kids is wrong, kids are impressionable, they believe anything,

religion causes war and death, look at all the wars now, most are over religion..

Tell him the truth: There is no God and the world was created by the laws of Physics.

God built the world through love and because of love. He is shaping it even up to today. The world took millions of years in human time but in God’s time it took just a few days. Don’t get the time measures mixed up.

God created the world as the home of human beings, whom he created in order to extend His love over them (His love being without end), and have them love Him back.

He built it because we needed a place to stay and the sun was too hot and Mars was too cold. But this one was just right.

She created it to give herself a laugh at all the religious maniacs claiming they are 'right' and fighting amongst themselves to prove it.

Hello Bunny,

I think he built the world to house a people who he could have fellowship with in a responsive relationship with. He is creator and that bit of God is in us I think. Because we love to create.
