And why did Christians for so long insist 'hell' was in the middle of the earth?

There's no way to know for sure whether or not there is such a thing, let alone where either heaven or hell is located. If it's within this universe, there are far too many reaches of it that cannot be viewed or observed because of a limit set by the speed of light, and the speed at which our galaxy is moving away from the majority of the universe.

If it's on another plane of existence (another dimension, perhaps?), then science has only been able to peer into 4 dimensions: 3 of space and 1 of time. Heaven and hell have not been observed there.

There is no evidence of a heaven or hell existing inside the universe or outside the universe. Some people point to the bible but it also talks of dragons and unicorns so that eliminates it from being real evidence.

Hell was assumed to be under the feet of the people on the planet because of the bible. It was not technically described as being in the center of the planet but deep below the surface. Way below heaven if you will.

Obviouisly there is no way of ever knowing this unless someone died for 10 minutes, then was revived... But most likely in a whole different dimension are heaven and hell... The universe is an infinite place, but I doubt God would make heaven just another galaxy, the whole concept of dimensions and universes are so complex... Its virtually impossible to comprehend alot of things having to do with them.

The word "uni-verse" is intended to mean "everything" (one-turn).

So if Heaven and Hell exist, these realms would be part of the "universe."

The "Heavens" are associated with the sky. The stars are one thing we can't change. The clouds, when you look at them, seem to be an ideal place to spend eternity, don't you think? So I guess the opposite of Heaven would have to exist below ground.

Heaven and hell are SPIRITUAL concepts, not PHYSICAL. "location" doesn't apply.

Why middle of the earth? Because the early Christians had a limited knowledge/understanding of SPIRITUAL realm.

If the universe is comprised of everything that exists, and if heaven and hell exist, then they must be within the universe. Our perceptions don't allows to experience the totality of the universe. We experience only three dimensions, and science tells us there are many more.

that is one among 2 places as defined by technique of scripture: Outer darkness, Matthew 8:12, the position some believe it truly is the "black holes" in area that are enlarging and are too warm to talk about or that is an area outside of God in a literal burning position. considering that God's throne is contained in the North, or perhaps compasses are gauged by technique of real North, feasible in effortless words assume that Hell is contained in the perimeters of the north of the universe in case you're taking what Isaiah 14 says as literal.

Outside--since it's supernatural. Or the supernatural stuff does not exist. Or -- the bible says god destroyed the tower of babel since people were almost there. So wherever the tower was.

2nd question: Because they didn't understand the scientific method. This is why many theists somehow doubt the fact of evolution.
