Palm trees are flexible enough that their trunks did not break off. Once the wind stopped, they sprang back up again due to their flexibility.

those answers sure sound good BUT the fact is that anything with a small surface area ( like poles and signs ) survived IF they were not struck with other objects - so the closer they were to shore and the further they were from buildings the more likely that they would survive ( sounds like a palms location doesn't it )

watch the vidios and you will see the water was no faster than a normal wave there was just more of it ( and the real danger was the debris )

Because they are Palm trees and they evolved to withstand surf and wind.
