Minwax makes a product called PolyShades. You can get it at your local Home Depot, or your local hardware store. You can use it over paint. I have done, and it works fine, but of course you don't get any wood grain.

Another option is to use a gel stain. Minwax makes one of those, too. You'd apply the gel stain right over the paint, then use a graining tool to "carve" wood grain into the stain. Once the stain was dry, you apply a coat of polyurthane for protection. Again, all this is available in the Stain aisle at THD.

No matter what you do, try it out on a hidden, or inconspicuous area of your wood first. You want to be sure that the result you want is what you get!

Look for Minwax Gel Stain. It is a stain that can be applied over wood, metal, fiberglass and other non-wood surfaces. To get the grain effect of wood, use a wood graining tool by UGL. Home Depot may have both items.

General Finishes Gel Stain can be applied over ANYthing! This product is AMAZING! SO easy to work with, and the end results are always GORGEOUS! (No, I don't work for the company or get a kick-back for recommending them so highly. LOL I DO refinish furniture and use this product frequently!)
Here's the link to their website.

And here's a pic of a console table I refinished; the top was done with General Finishes Gel Stain in Brown Mahogany. I buy mine at a local woodworking store.

NO, do not prime it, primers are made to seal the wood and cover the grain! Use a gel stain and experiment in a hidden spot until it looks ok, then apply your gel the way it looks good, follow the directions and it should come out perfect...
