The bible calls angels "messengers". They exhist and are part of God's creation. Most of the time we don't see them, well because....most never have seen them knowingly. The bible speaks of them as literal beings, but the traditional idea of angels with wings and halo's is an inaccurate view of them. There are only a couple places in the bible that talk about angels having wings and they were specific angels that did things under the authority of God from heaven. Most angels spoken of looked and dressed just like human beings and their identity was only revealed when they showed supernatural powers.

The 'thingy' is symbolic. Real Angelic beings exist, but they are not contained within plastic or plaster.

Angels are very real...I've actually seen one. Of course, I was clinically dead at the time....
Otoh, the "thingy" is purely symbolic..
EDIT: unlike most of my answers to you, I am not kidding here...I truly was clinically dead, and I really was visited by an angel. He was with me in the ambulance, and also in the ER. Later, he came to see me in a locked Intensive Care Ward, twice. However, no one at the hospital seemed to remember seeing him, or letting him in, or out.

I would imagine that anyone who is capable of believing in a supernatural deity who created the cosmos, galaxy, planets and all life in it after the domestication of the dog would be perfectly capable of believing in angels.

angels are described in Ezekiel... not to mention... they're really cool and powerful warriors. Not the cute little cupid baby angels that people think of.
And yeah, they have wings, baptist man.
