I know the sign is fenced off (too many jumpers.) Whether or not you can hike near it I don't know. If all else fails, call information at Griffith Park and see if they can clue you in.

Chris, the best way to get there is to hike from Griffith Park. If you park in the residential area at the end of Deronda Drive, you will be ticketed and towed. Last time I was there, there were No Parking signs all over, and it was vigorously enforced by the residents. and LAPD.

The best way to get there is from the Griffith Observatory (which just reopened, by the way). Just below the Observatory Mount Hollywood Drive. Start at the tunnel (which has been used in many movies, including "Back to the Future 2" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"). Go east on Mount Hollywood Drive. Note that this road is closed at sunset, and during high fire danger. Drive a couple miles until you see a gated fire road on your left. This may or may not be labeled "Mulholland Highway". You can park here and hike the road west down to Mt. Lee Drive (which is also closed to cars). When you get to Mt. Lee Drive, go right (up the hill). Follow the road as it circles around the mountain to the top. The views here are incredible. Bring your camera. You will be treated to spectacular views of the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, and if you are lucky, you will be able to see the ocean, and even Catalina on a clear day. However, take note that the top is now fenced off, and you cannot access the sign any more.

Back in the day when I worked at the Boys Camp, we used to hike to the sign AT NIGHT and climb it, hanging our "cabin flag" as high as we could on one of the letters. Now, however, it's best to heed the "No Trespassing" signs and stay away from the emergency communications center (where the large radio towers are).
