It probably stems from the old-fashioned thinking that a woman should not pursue the man. So, in an effort to get a round this "rule", girls often get their friends to see ask a boy out. It's also probably a defensive mechanism, if he turns her down, at least its not directly. It's a really weird way of doing things, but hey, when you're young like that, you're too afraid to ask guys out!

cuz it hurts to be rejected to your face1 and if he says yes the girl has someone to talk to about it!
