Follow his lead: make conversation and act interested. If you're really nervous you should sit down and make a list of things you can talk about (I know it's nerdy, but if you're nervous it will really help!). If he doesn't take the check within a few minutes of the server setting it on the table pick it up and see how much you owe. However, generally it is expected that the man pays on the first date (and if he does be sure to thank him). Good luck!

What is something that you guys have in common? Maybe a movie you both want to see, a resturant you both like, maybe even just going to a park and walking around if you both enjoying being outside. Or if one of you drives then drive around at night looking at all the house decorated for christmas then go grab some hot chocolate. Talk about your hobbies, dreams, goals, etc and don't forget to ask quesions about your date.

When it comes to the bill, tradition says the guy is supposed to pay but there is no reason why you two can't split the bill. If he says he's got it then offer to leave the tip.

Good luck.

Hello... =)

If you are a woman, then politely ignore the fact that the check has come, and ask for another coffee, or excuse yourself to the powder room. You don't want to hurry out of a restaurant on the first date anyway. It is best to linger and talk for awhile. If he doesn't seem motivated to pay, then reach towards the check. If he's a decent guy, he will stop you, if not, then there shouldn't be a second date.

Namaste,

--Tom

If you feel alright going dutch, feel free to let the guy know well ahead of time. Otherwise it is customary for the guy to pay. Especially if he decides where you go.
First dates are all about getting to know each other. Have conversation, see if you enjoy the company. Usually by the end of the night you have an idea If there should be a second date.

I've always thought going to a library or a bookstore is a great first date, what the person reads tells you a lot about them, including what depth of thought they're capable of. If they don't read, there's a problem there, they aren't interested in personal intellectual enhancement or growth.
When the check comes at lunch or dinner, a lady should always offer to pay for her half and have the cash on hand to do so. If he fights you on it and insists on paying, let him. If he doesn't have the money for his half, he's probably a dirt bag, pay your half and leave him at the restaurant to fend for himself and don't call him again. Or, if you really like him and think he's worth all that trouble, you could pay for his half too and then have him pay for the next time. Your choice.

Although I am against the stereotype that men should always pay for everything in a relationship, I DO believe that he should always pay on the first date. Don't stress, most gentlemen will grab the check before you have to think about it, and if he doesn't, you should probably move on to the next guy.

Talk and get to know the person. The guy should pay on the first date but it also depends on who invited who.

on a first date a movie should be just fine, that way you dont have to worry about the check either.

For me it depends on a couple of things. Did he ask you out? Then he should pay. Did you meet online and agree to meet somewhere? Then you go dutch. Personally, I like to pay for my own, that way I don't feel obligated in any way and let's face it, dating is expensive. If he's meeting people and dating frequenly, he could become broke very quickly.

Nice lunch, good conversation.

If you want there to be a second date, grab the check and say, "you can get it next time."
