Only if they need to know where they are at the moment. A typical GPS tells the user where they are. It doesn't tell searchers where the users are. If what you're think of is a device that will let searchers know where someone is, then you're talking about an EPIRB - an emergency position indicating radio beacon, or a PLB - personal locator beacon. These send a signal to satellites that can be relayed to searchers. Boaters use EPIRBs often, especially if they are in remote sections of the ocean. PLBs can locate a person within 2-3 miles typically. A gps-enabled one can get a rescuer within 100 yards, more or less.

Yes it would make sense to carry GPS tracking devices. I think that it would increase survival rates and lower search and rescue costs.

BTW, if a GPS tracking device works in a car it would work for a person. And no, the signal is not guaranteed but if a hiker were to have the device they would know when they did have a signal and they could stay put.

You don't get out much do you? A GPS tells you where you are at right now. It also tells YOU your route. What I am sure you mean is for everyone to carry a type of ELT. like on aircraft.

Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)

Yes that would help in some rescue situations. Every climber and outdoorsman knows and assumes the risk he/she is taking by being in an outdoor activity.

If everyone would just carry their cell phones to the top of the mountain on the guided-paved trail with hand rails (for the scary spots), we wouldn't have to rescue them anymore.

Be sure to stop at the drinking fountains on the way to the summit and buy a souviner shot glass or T-shirt while at the top!

They take all major credit cards!

a sturdy question - the thanks to respond to it - by means of the undeniable fact that is pleasant. because what we get out of it can't be measured bought or bought with funds. What we get from this adventure is sheer excitement." -George Leigh Mallory "by means of the undeniable fact that is there" -Sir Edmund Hillary We climbers and mountaineers understand the risks in touch with hiking, yet we get excitement from it. That would be a very expenive purchase. And most people are confident in their moutaineering so they don't even think about "What happens if I get lost" senarios. The best thing to do, when you go on any hike of any kind is to let someone know where you are giong, but many people don't even do this.

Probably not because a GPS doesn't recieve signal in some areas, and I'm guessing it probably won't get any from a mountain.
