If all you did was sleep on your neck the wrong way, I doubt it's a pinched nerve. I have a pinched nerve, and I doubt you can get one from sleeping on your neck wrong. More likely, it's extreme muscle stiffness and soreness from an awkward position.
Keep your neck still when you can and put a warm heating pad on your neck/shoulders. Take some ibuprofin and relax as much as possible. After your neck's warmed up, try moving it around just a little bit, then put the heating pad back on. It'll go away with time.
If it doesn't go away within a couple days, go to your doctor and see what they say to do. If it IS a pinched nerve, you'll get prescription pain killers, exercises to do, and probably physical therapy.
Good luck!

I agree with the poster who said you should apply heat to the area and that its probably NOT a pinched nerve. I wake up with what's called a "crook in my neck" by old timmers atleast once a year. Yes, its painful and puts a drain on the rest of my day or days as it sometimes can be. My aunt used to come over my house when I was younger and pop my neck! Yes, it sounds painful and it was. It was also over quickly and the "crook" was out. I DONT recommend this method because you could do damage to yourself if you are not a chiropractor or really know what you are doing. Hey, thats anouther option..go to a chiropractor. They will apply heat to your neck like you would at home, and then try to take the lump out with aggrevation or by popping it back into place. Again, all this sounds painful but it works. In the end, if you would rather do it at home yourself and dont have a auntie to pop your neck back place..lol, you can use a heating pad or one of those disposbale ones you can find at a CVS or Walmart for about 8 bucks! You can also reapply a hot towel to the area if you cant make it to the store and dont have a heating pad near you. While you do get to the store, pick up a few iron pills..they will help this from happening too much in the future. Take a pain killer and take a long nap. When you wake, your neck should be a little less stiff and you can start to move it around slowly. Keep that up and you will be ok by tommorow. Atleast ok enough to be able to move it so you can do your daily routine without too much pain.

The muscles in your neck will tense up to protect the joint if the joint is out of whack. Most likely warm, moist heat will help you relax your muscles and some Tylenol will help with the pain. A chiropractor probably can help you get your neck vertebrae working again, but I would talk with a MD, too. You probably have some sort of muscle imbalance that causes this and you'll want to work with a physical therapist to strengthen whatever muscles are necessary to keep it from happening again in the future.
