Local law enforcement administrators would prefer not to have their patrol officers carrying fully automatic pistols for a wide range of reasons.
A fully automatic pistol would reduce the control that a field officer would have over his/her weapon. This would greatly affect sight re-alignment after every shot. The officer would need to have full control over his/her weapon to prevent stray rounds from hitting unintended targets.
With semi-automatic pistols, officers are able to fire one shot at a time. Officers are able to evaluate each shot that is fired and determine that the appropriate level of force has been applied without the overkill [literally]; plus, the officer does not waste the precious ammunition, especially during a drawn out gunfight.

Some will carry the compact. But i'm almost positive the Glock 22 is the most common handgun for police.

The gun is fully auto [a machine pistol], and has no practical application for 95% of the street officers.

Expense and there's not a big need for fully auto. Plus, while the Glock is a good weapon, there is no real safety or decock on the weapon. Not good for me...I love my SIG PRO .357

If automatic fire is needed, which it rarely is in law enforcement, you are far better off with an SMG or rifle. Auto fire in a pistol is not very practical.

Because automatic fire isn't really an advantage in most situations. And yes they are expensive.

Why aren't people allowed to own them? Why do you think that it is safe for Cops to have them, but not for people?
