When I was a young teen, I went on a class trip to Chicago and we ate at this pizza place that was unique. I can't remember the name of it, but I guess it's some sort of Chicago icon. All I remember about it was the entire restaurant was loaded ceiling to floor with handwritten signatures of everyone who has dined there. It was really interesting to see. There must have been millions of signatures. I don't remember if I signed my name too. Anyone know what this place is? Is it still there?

Gino's on Rush, encouraged graffiti, it's everywhere, walls, tables, benches, chairs, ceiling, floor, light bulbs, the ORIGINAL cornmeal deep dish pizzeria in Chicago, they opened over 50 years ago in 1954 on Rush street, when I was a teenager in the 70s, it was between Jays and the world famous FACES discothèque. Gino's East started in 1966 on Superior, over by Benihana of Tokyo, the reason Gino's East was called "east" was because it was east of the ORIGINAL. The original Recipe, and the best, came from Gino's on Rush, they ARE the best in town. If you look on the Gino's East website they will tell you who opened it in 1966, it wasn't a man called Gino, it was 2 cabbies who took the idea and tried to copy/steal the recipe as close as possible to the ORIGINAL GINO'S ON RUSH which is still on Rush street to this day 930 N. Rush to be exact and still the best, and one of the last of the true Deep Dish pizza joints in the city. So if your looking to have the best Pizza in Chicago or the world for that matter, if you are from here, it's
THE ORIGINAL GINO'S PIZZA ON RUSH EST.1954.

oh my gosh. . . I ate there and signed that wall as well but I have been married since then but I was too on a class trip! this place was awesome and the food was great! It was about 2 1/2 years ago for me and they were just down the street from Hooters. I got myself a shirt! that trip was awesome I think that it was my art class. We went to the art institute there and seen all the amazing art works and then went on to the navy pier and out out golfed out there! it was sooooooo much fun! I think that the name of the place is Pizzeria Uno's, or ginos east or something like that, I'm not sure. The only bad thing that I remember there is that the wait for their pizza was sooooooo long! and the drinks took forever! if you go there again I guess remember to take a book with ya!

The place you describe is Gino's, and it has moved, but they took the interior with them. So, if you signed the wall before, it's still on the wall at the Wells St. Location. The new location is an old Planet Hollywood, so it is very spacious, but lacks the character of the original site.
Uno is another Chicago icon, still in its original location; no writing on the wall though.
If you really want to know what the best Chicago pizza is, Gino's, Uno, Giordano's and Lou Malnati's are all good choices.
I like Pizzeria Due. Just a block from it's sister store (Uno) and still in it's original location. A little less touristy than Uno or Gino's.

It's Gino's East, here's a quote from the website. They've got a few chicagoland locations.

In a city known as the "Pizza Capital of the World", The Original Gino's East is still the number one pizza restaurant where customers from near and far return year after year to scribble their names into the wood and stucco walls of our flagship restaurant in downtown Chicago.

It's Gino's East. Very good deep dish (chicago style) pizza.

If you want another unique chicago pizza experience, head to "Chicago Pizza" on Lincoln. This pizza comes in individual cast iron skillets and it resembles a pizza ball or round calzone.

The best thin crust pizza in chicago, in my opinion, is "Tomato Head" on Webster near DePaul.

That's Gino's! :) I saw it on Food Network and thought it was funky with all the writing on the walls, and the pizza looked delish, so I went there, it was great! The first answer is totally WRONG.
