I am of the thought that this is the root of many of our global social problems. There are many factors that play a key role in the way that individuals evangelize. Our spirituality plays a key role in our psychology as individuals.
For some it stems from their insecurities. God is something that there is little tangible proof of. For others it stems from their pure joy recieved from the more positive aspects of their religion. For many I believe that it stems from fear. Fear of god, fear of hell, fear of hypocricy. Fear can cause damage psychologically as well as physically and is as infectious as love and kindness.
This is an issue that the human race has been grappling with sense there was more than one 'god'.
I have hope for the future that we will begin to see that 'god', 'religion', 'spirituality', 'faith', etc are all very personal relationships that we develop over our lifetime. They say that the best teachers do not evangelize but rather lead by example and wait for questions to be asked of them.

Religion is the adherence to codified beliefs and rituals which generally involve a faith in a spiritual nature as well as a study of inherited ancestral traditions, knowledge and wisdom related to understanding human life.
The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures. "Organized religion" generally refers to an organization of people supporting the exercise of some religion with a prescribed set of beliefs, often taking the form of a legal entity Other religions believe in personal revelation and responsibility.
"Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system".
So everyone thinks that the religion they follow is the right one because it's sort of brain washing. Therefore they try to force it on you and try to brainwash you too.

Because those hypocrites think that they can convict people better than God can (including hell threats) and don't try to accomplish the true goal for all Christians: to show the love of God and his mercy to people.

I used to be pushy but then realized my mistakes, and I've been praying for and showing love to people ever since.

Woot.

Some people believe that they have the duty, as commanded by Christ Himself, to go out and preach to the ends of the earth.

I disagree with a lot of the answers given. I think it is actually people insecurities (not their conviction) that causes this behavior. They feel that if they can somehow convince you, then it will make them slightly more right.

If everyone in the world believes in what you believe in, you need less faith to believe it.

Also, it leads to social control which can be as good as complete power.

On an individual basis: “I’m happy with this, than you will be happy with it too. I want to make you happy”

Because it is hard to have faith to that kind of nonsense if nobody else believes it. You have to maintain the numbers of believers.

Because they're so sure that the're right.

Well, some are also so sure that you're going to hell and so concerned for your soul, and so sure that they can save you if they JUST TRY HARD ENOUGH!!
