If you aren't trying to get back with her then don't say anything to her. Why do you want to string her along? Is it your child?

Hmmm.... ask yourself this question, why do you want to communicate with her at all? How long ago did you break up? How long were you dating? Are you currently dating someone else? (I'm guessing no, otherwise you probably wouldn't even think of the ex) Has she been pursuing you by phone or e-mail and you are wondering how to respond?
I'm not a big fan of communication with EXes in general, especially if you are dating someone else now. But, it is the holidays and we are approaching the end of the year, New Year's and all. So, I suppose it would be okay to send a note (e-mail or snail mail if you prefer) and just say that you were reflecting upon the last year and just wanted to wish her well. Keep it short and sweet. Don't give her too much to interpret. Women can read into things, trust me, even when there isn't anything to read into. Keep it non-sentimental.
Good luck to you and your ex!

Just say the basic stuff without sounding like you're being forced to call her. Tell her congradulations on the baby, hope she has a happy birthday, and happy holidays. Start off the convo by telling her that you were thinking about her and then ned the convo jus sayin "well, jus wanted to catch up with you, happy holidays, talk to you soon"... or something like that. She'll be happy you called, unless your relationship ended on a bad note.

Something short but powerful...catchy too. After you decide what you will say, making sure it will be short, powerful, catchy, and sweet, then kind of disappear for a while...2-3 weeks or longer. The only thing she will remember about you during this time is the last thing that you said to her...especially if it is catchy. If it is meaningful and touching for her then she will be very happy to see you the next time you come around

Just talk to her like you would any other person. Hi, how are you? How's things with the baby? Plans for your Birthday? For Christmas? What have you been doing?
Be friendly...be nice. How did you talk to her the first time you met her? With any luck you didn't just start flirting but really wanted to talk to her. Talk to her like you would one of your friends. It's not hard, just go easy and smile.

Be civil. No matter what, be civil. It will always show that you take the higher ground. Tell her that you are happy for her and that she can call on you if need be. Tell her that you wish her all the best and that she is truly blessed with having a child. Tell her that this will be the first step on a long road, but that she will be an excellent mother.

You must be very careful especially if she is not with anybody right now. I have an ex I can't even speak to for fear she will think I am trying to get back with her. If I ran into her in public and just said hi, she would call me for weeks.

Just act friendly and naturally and ask her how she is and celebrate her birthday or Christmas. But keep it short, I mean the conversation cos you might mislead her and she might think you want to see her again etc., I think.

Is the baby yours ? If not.. then I wouldn't say anything other than Happy Holidays, Happy Birthday and Congratulations...nothing that would lead her on. If it is yours . . well you have lots to say to her.
