That's the Jewish view: Satan is Hebrew for "adversary." He is good and loyal to God but tests mankind. He is the equivalent of a sparring partner in karate--fighting you with the intention of making you stronger.

No one knows why God didn't punish satan right off when he changed from Lucifer, the most beautiful angel ever created to Satan the ugly twisted and warped thing he is today. Satan does not do the punishing though. His kingdom is not Hell. Hell is Satan's prison, not his dwelling place. Currently satan is called the prince of the power of the air and was cast out of heaven, but not totally to the ground. I'm not sure the implications of that but I think he's not exactly on our plane, or maybe he is and is also on another plane. Anyway, I don't see Satanville on a map so I assume his "prince-hood" is authority and spiritualual in nature. He has been trying to be like the most High God since his initial fall and is trying to set up a one world government so he can rule over God's creation. He will succeed but for oh such a short time and then the Lord will kick his butt down to the Lake of Fire where he will be imprisoned for eternity. God punishes sin with death. Death is separation. There are 2 forms of death, each is a form of separation. The first death is our separation from our body. The "Second Death" as it is called in the bible is permanent separation from God.
Blessed are those who escape the second death the Bible says. If you have the first death without Christ...the second death follows. If you have Christ, you die the first but not the second. I hope that helps your understanding a bit and as always I speak from a christian perspective.

If you miss your bus and have to walk home in the rain, is that God punishing you for your sins or just what naturally happens if you gossip too long at the timeclock after work? Why would an omniscient God need to prove your fidelity? Why would a benevolent and omnipotent God allow evil (never mind Satan) to exist? If you want to make sense of life, try to do it with something better than the comic book version of religion.

Satan is the gravity upon the mind that causes mankind to bound to his organic mind i.e use 10% of the brain. And while mankind is bound by the God of this world he is unable to know God. Yeshua/Jesus presented a pattern for mankind that enabled him to escape the ruler of this world and come back home to the edenic kingdom.

Remember how Yeshua stated that he now sits on the right hand of God? There is a left hand of God, which we dwell. Its called the left hand of correction and is sometimes known as God's school house. It's the place where we attempt to evolve into completion and where we learn from our past mistakes etc. So ultimately we can become fit to know God. So the answer is yes the right hand of God lets the left hand of God which is commonly known as Satan work his laws upon mankind until he eventually comes to his senses and goes back to the right hand.

We are given things from god to see if we will use them the way he has or use them for what we are tempted to use them for, by those who use what they have been given for evil.

So when people make bad choices, they bring punishments upon themselves. Because they are then less like God and can't be as He is. Less free and happy the way God wants us to be. The Son Of God said, Be ye therefor perfect, even as your Father In Heaven is perfect.

Satan has his freedom to chose as we all do. But for every wrong choice there can be consequences. I think a lot of bad things happen because of what we bring on to ourselves. God is very loving and the "trials" and temptations we encounter are up to us to chose how we will deal with them. Hard things happen to us to test and try us so that we can become stronger people and learn and grow. God loves you - Satan does not.

Oh brother! Why would a loving compassionate god allow evil in his creation? Just to provide some sparks I suppose? Does this not sound absolutely stupid to y'all?

The 'sin' is disobedience. The punishment is death. Jesus however paid that debt (punishment) even though "no sin was found in him."

Meaning: He was not disobedient, rather OBEDIENT and yet sacrificed his LIFE for our sake.

it's because we have a free will and a choice to do go along with the temptation or to resist us, God punishes us for the choices we make, if we didn't make the wrong choice we wouldn't have to be punished
