Morphine is a narcotic, below is a small excerpt from an online resource that phyichans often refer to when needing clarafications. I suggest you go to the web site and read the whole thing for your answers

Opioid analgesics (narcotics), the most powerful analgesics, are the mainstay for treatment of severe acute pain and chronic pain due to cancer and other serious disorders. Opioids are preferred because they are so effective in controlling pain. The use of opioids to treat chronic pain not due to cancer is becoming more acceptable but is still relatively uncommon. Opioids are not appropriate for everyone.

Opioids are all chemically related to morphine, a natural substance extracted from poppies, although some opioids are extracted from other plants and other opioids are produced in a laboratory.

Opioids have many side effects

Morphine is a very powerful sedative. It was used as a recreational drug in the 1850s, and many prominent authors and artists caved to its addictive qualities. It's still used as a painkiller in patients who are in a LOT of pain. In large enough doses, it is lethal.

It is a Narcotic (opiate) medication that acts on the central nervous to control pain. It is for severe pain only.

It can be very addicting and except for cases of a terminal illness, should only be used on a short term basis for acute pain.
