how would you do it?

what you need to do is first make common denomenators throughout the ENTIRE equation.

what does 2 and 3 and 5 each multiply to? 60. so the common denomenator will be 60.

30x/60 + 20x/60 = 300/60

now, you can get rid of the "60"'s in the denomenator and you are left with:
30x + 20x = 300
you add up the x's and you get:
50x = 300
and now you divide by 50 on both sides and you'll get:
x = 6
done.

I prefer to factor the equation
x(1/2+1/3)=5
x(3/6+2/6)=5
x(5/6)=5
6/5(5/6x)=5/1*6/5
x=6

Just for fun substitute 6 for x in the equation and you get
2+3=5
For those of you who said 1, 1/2+1/3 = 5/6

1) assuming X and x are two unique variables.. you solve for X and x... hence X = 4 and x = 9. Therefore X/2 + x/3 = 4/2 + 9/3 = 2 + 3 = 5....

x/2 + x/3 = 5
6 * x/2 + 6 * x/3 = 6 * 5
3x + 2x = 30
5x = 30
x = 6

x/2+x/3=5
multiply 2 to both sides
x+2x/3=10
multiply 3 to both sides
3x+2x=30
combine like terms
5x=30
divide both sides by 5
x=6

divide the x from both sides: 2+3=5/x
then add, 5=5/x
then multiple x from both sides, 5x=5
divide 5 from both sides, x=1

common denominator.

3x/6 + 2x/6= 30/6

5x=30
x= 6
