Yes both Sigma and Tamron make a 70 - 300 mm telephoto lens that will fit the D80. When I did research prior to buying this lens, all forums seemed to indicate that the Tamron was the better lens. In most situations it does OK, but in high contrast situations it suffers terribly from purple fringe. Overall though for the price I am happy with it.

On your Dad's D80 this will work from 105mm - a massive 450 mm. With a little creativity I have taken some excellent shots of the moon.

I have recently acquired the Nikon version if this lens with my new D80, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet sorry. It's not looking good before Christmas either sadly.

You could get a D40 with a 2 lens kit for under 600 new and also get a flash for that 800... if you are truly wanting to learn photography this would be the way to go. You don't need all the fancy bells and whistles cause more of it takes away from true creativity. No need to get a DSLR and turn it into a big point and shoot

Although I prefer to stick to Nikon lenses, any Nikon F-mount lens from any manufacturer will work. Whether all functions are supported or not, I can not say.

The Tamron 18-200 has reviewed fairly well and it costs about half what the Nikon 18-200 costs, but it does not have "VR."

Here's what to buy if you want to knock his socks off and have the dough:

Any lens with Nikon F mount. Sigma, Tamron Auto focus lens will work, but Nikon lens will be the sharpest.
