It's a good idea to have more than one class.
a good selection is: Bud and Heineken, you can also buy some foreign bear to add somthing different to your selection

It depends where you live (I am so tired of all the Answerers out here that mention just American brands, not remembering that many Questioners are in other countries).
I would offer a mix:
1 mass domestic popular brand
1 nationally (or at least regionally) distributed "upscale" brand
1 imported "character brand"
1 fine micro-brewery specialty brand
Additionally, if I were North American I would add a popular light.
So - say - if I lived in Vancouver, BC, the mix might be Labatt Blue, Sleeman Honey Ale, Stella Artois, Vancouver Ale and Molson Light.
South of the border in Seattle it might be Budweiser, Sam Adams
Lager or Ale, Heineken or Dos Equis Amber, Widmer Bros. IPA, and Miller Light.

All depends on how many people you are talking about. If there are a large number say more than10, I would get a Kegg. If less you might try a holiday ale.

I would go with getting either a 12 pack or case depending on how many people and how much your friends drink, but I would get a light beer(Miller Lite/Coors Light)an original(Bud/Coors)and a lager(Ying Ling),Most people would be happy,if not get a keg fill it w/ the beer of your choice and people will just deal w/ it,you can suggest they bring their own!
