My son is almost 3. We have been trying to potty train for almost a month now. He will run and pee on the toilet, but won't even attempt to poop. After he goes in his underwear though, he wants to be cleaned up right away. I try to catch him while he is going, but he runs away to finish, then takes off his underwear. Any suggestions?

About 45 min after he eats make him sit on the toilet for about an hour..eventually you can bargain with him... one poopie and you can get off....it worked for one of our kids

Some kids develop an aversion to pooping on the toilet because of bad/painful experiences. For example, if the first time he tried pooping on the toilet he had discomfort from constipation or a dry anus he may associate that with the toilet.

Unfortunately, there's no quick fix for that. You'll have to take the advice of one of the previous posters that said to make him sit on the toilet for a while after eating and when he poops make a big deal about it telling him things like "that wasn't so bad," and "that's my big boy, you make me so proud." If he has a regular poop schedule your job is made a lot easier.

My daughter did the same thing when she was nearly 3. Peeing was easy, but getting her to go poop was a pain. We eventually restricted potty training rewards to just #2.

Try telling him that if he goes poop on the toilet then he will get a reward, and give him whatever he likes best!!
That should work! and if he does go on the toilet then clap and praise him! They like that!

And if he still does not want to go on the toilet then tell him ur going to take away some of his free time, toys, etc , or sit him on a chair for time out

He'll learn that way. And understand that it is wrong to poop in his pants and eventually use the pottie

If he won't go poo on the toilet, then it may be time for some time out, or a spanking. Remember, you're the boss. Patience is the key. He knows what you want him to do, but he's refusing to do it. After he gets into the habit of #2 in the toilet, then a reward such as a toy would be in order. If he goes back to his old habits, then take the toy away and start at the beginning again. Best of luck to you.

It seams like he understands that he isn't supposed to go in his underware or he wouldn't hide to finish.

This means he knows its wrong. Every time he goes in his underware make him sit in the corner or whatever you do to discipline. BUT make it clear before you discipline that what he just done needs to be done on the potty and then discipline him. When he does it right reward him with something he loves.

Or try getting him something he really likes but tell him he cant have it until he goes #2 on the potty!

I had the same problem with my son when I potty trained him. and since it was around Christmas I told him that Santa would bring him a special gift if he went #2 in the toilet, it worked like a charm... and all I had to do was to buy a special gift from santa :o) Good Luck!!

I'm having the same problem and he's 4...I try to watch out for him and watch him but he wants to stand up by the toilet and wipe his butt til it's finished...His hands stink and he gets it everywhere...I try to reward him but he doesn't want to do any of it...I think it has to deal with his brother being 2 also...He isn't out of diapers...They are both in day care...And it still doesn't work

My parents used to pay me when I was a baby. I'd get a quarter every time I'd use the toilet to #2.

smack that little boy upside the head and tie him to the toilet seat. eventually he'll poop right. my little brother actually used to do the same thing, but he would poop in anything that was open, like a shoe, a box, even our toy helicopter. my parents rewarded him if he pooped in the toilet. so tell him you'll give him something like flinstone vitamins if he uses the toilet. we were always suckers for those

Punish him when he goes in his pants.
