I was advised to buy a VR 18-200mm lens, but because of supply & demand it runs about $900. Is there any alternatives? Whats excellent for night shots? Close-up? Portrait? Low-light conditions? Is Tamron a great combination with a Nikon D80? Additional flash recommendations?

Low cost online stores for photography equipment?

Thank you so much.

Tamron makes an 18-200 that reviews okay, but it does not have "VR." It costs about $400.

Think yourself lucky, I live in Australia and because everyone wants one here they are twice that price. The older Nikon 28 - 200 3.5-5.6 was also not a bad lens, it doesn't have vibration reduction but hey somewhere along the line you have to assume responsibility for your own photo taking and not leave it all to the camera.

I can't help you source one, but if you come across one second hand I would seriously consider it. There was one released in 2003, which is not yet old enough to be suffering from fungus etc unless it has been badly mistreated.
