I have recently started taking it. My husband and I desperately want to have children and if I became pregnant I would stop the medication until after the baby is born.
The contraindication leaflet says it does not know whether lamictal harms the baby. I wondered if any one knew.

Lamictal decreases folate concentrations and so obviously you'd need to supplement. (Folic acid is important for brain development.)
This drug is a category C - basically most drugs are of this category. Obviously if you can help it, you should try to find a drug that has more studies done on it. BUT there are women who have taken this drug in various studies and there have been reports of decreased concentration of the drug during pregnancy and then serum levels returning to normal post-delievery.

You can read more at http://www.lamictal.com/. Scroll down and click on "Complete presribing information...." link. On pages 24 and 25 you will find more info you are looking for plus a 1-800 number to register yourself in the lamotrigine pregnancy directory if you wish.
Hope this helps.

Lamictal (lamotrigine) carries a pregnancy risk of category C. This means that animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus and there are no controlled studies in women. Drugs in this category should be given only if the benefit justifies the risk.

Women who are considering pregnancy need to speak to the prescriber. And, yes, we knew.

There could desire to be a leaflet or insert in with the medicine, and it will inform you if that's volatile to a arising toddler, or whether that's secreted in breast milk. there is likewise a being pregnant catagory, "A" being no issues, going on to "D" that could desire to be risky to a fetus. If it has no information, then that's extra powerful to be secure than sorry, and you will could desire to end the medicine. appropriate of success to you.

Please don't just speak to an OB - speak to a neurologist (seizures) or psychiatrist (bipolar). And speak to one who is experienced in treating pregnant women. Going off meds might make things worse. Good luck.
