What's with all the poodle crosses? They all look alike *okay, most* which is a red-flag that the genes a poodle carries are VERY dominant, like brown eyes in people or the atbby gene in cats. Really, it seems that there is a rare, and I mean VERY rare chance that you will get a dog that most would find attractive *or is it just me?* http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/poodlemix.htm That is a link to the most popular poodle mixes on the market. Many of them have pictures *don't be fooled by the first pomapoo pic, it's not the most commonly occuring appearance*
i don't in any way advocate breeding mixed breed UNLESS your intent is to breed it in a way that will bring about a new breed *pick certain traits you want, breed only the dogs that carry these traits. common sense issue there*
All that I want to know is, why poodles? Why is it that poodle+whatever sounds like such a good idea? I don't get it. Do you?

Er... as for crossing causeing genetic problems, that's a bit ignorant to have said. Let's put it this way, if you make a baby with you borther/sister will that baby have more or less deffects than a child borne of two different races? Every PB worthy of being bred can most likely be traced back to being related to all of the others of its same breed that are of quality to breed. They all originated from the same line.
With that knowledge, wouldn't it be better to mix and match every now and then? When most of the breeds were created they did not know the evils of inbreeding. Heck, the royals themselves were all related and only married other royals. So is breeding two animals that cannot be traced to being related better or worse than two that are second or third cousins?
Before we go on a tangenant about dogs aren't people, the possobility and causes for genetic deffect are not species specific.

And the Tyke rears her ugly head! Yay and stuff. But this was a question, not a statement. Any veiws included were put there to support the "Why" of asking the questions.
What's half baked is the idea that breeds just magically appeared out of thin air. That would be an opinion of mine, but the only thing that would make that wrong is if I were saying it was fact.
The question was asked not to support new breeds being created *though it's not a bad idea, per se, in my opinion* but to ask why poodles are being mixed with everything, as I think that not only poodles are horrible looking creatures, but the offspring of poodle+whatever tends to be downright hideous in my opinion. I hadn't known about the hypoalergenic idea, but I think that's a weak argument at best considering most are saying that it wasn't caried on.

1) Because you can come up with cutesy "Poo" and "Oodle" names to convince people to shell out money for them.
2) Because you can convince the gullible that because one parent was a poodle it won't shed or cause allergies.
3) Because you can produce all kinds of "doodles" with only one stud dog. If you want to mass produce real breeds then you need two of each, but with "doodles" you only need one female of each and one poodle male. Cheaper that way.

They would have more, of course. This does not neccessarily relate to dogs. A Poodle crossed with a Lab with have puppies with HD, if both parents carry genes for it. With a *good* breeder of purebreds, things like that will have been tested for, and any afflicted dogs removed from the breeding population. Good breeders breed health problems out of a breed, and a WELL BRED pup will be LESS likely than a randomly or thoughtlessly bred dog, to have common health issues.
Not to mention, a brother/sister breeding is extremely rare, and would only be done if the person is sure her stock is free of health defects.
BTW - I happen to think there is nothing more impressive that a good Poodle in a nice clip. Poodle crosses are cute, but there is just no reason to be breeding them.

Short answer-$$$$. People have for many years thought that Poodles don't shed and don't cause allergies. I have had an AKC Poodle. They do shed (not loads) and they are not hypoallergenic. Sorry. People think that breeding them to heavy shedders you will eliminate the shedding. Not often the case. Take a labradoodle-many shed like mad. It is an effort to make the ultimate dog-won't shed, smart, good with people and kids, and requires no work from me. People want to have a dog, just not all the dog stuff that goes with them-hair, dirt, training.
Also-poodles were a hunting dog (fancy that-some people even hunt them now). The water proof coat was clipped to protect joints and major body parts (chest, neck). The sizes come from the fact that these are very smart dogs and easier to train-so why not make sizes for keeping as a companion vs running in the woods to hunt game. Eventually they lost the use as hunters but remained as companion animals. Poodles have been used in lots of long standing breeds for centuries. The current use of Poodles is not new, but it is not being done to build a better hunter it is done to push an allergy free version of a Lab.

Yours is the two older than 5 weeks (because of the fact she's plenty extra suitable than a Toy Poodle domestic dog) or isn't purebred. that's probable mixed with Maltese, Shih Tzu, or consistent with danger a Miniature Poodle somewhat than a Toy. A Toy Poodle IS an AKC & ANKC known breed, in basic terms like the Miniature Poodle and the customary Poodle. A Teacup Poodle, although, is in basic terms a disgustingly in-bred and thus stunted runt, produced by ability of irresponsible breeders who % to bypass them off as "fashion designer" breeds - comparable is going for Labradoodles, Pugaliers, Moodles, Cockapoos, and so on. in the adventure that your domestic dog somewhat is in basic terms 5 weeks previous, you are going to have a no longer difficulty-free time homestead-practise her and socialising her. the socialisation is going to be the toughest section - except you have already got a thoroughly vaccinated dogs living with you, it is going to be very very nearly impossible to tutor her any chew inhibition - a ability dogs frequently learn whilst twiddling with their dam & littermates. you will would desire to attend until she's the right age to flow to domestic dog preschool, yet even that isn't triumph over the fact she is lacking out on a considered necessary part of her progression. wish that helps.

I think people are trying to get a cross between the non-shedding of the poodle with fur that doesn't have to be groomed once a month as in the case of a purebred poodle.
Just my thought-but it makes sense (to me).
My question is if you want a low maintenance, non-shedding animal-do you really even want a dog? Even a dog that doesn't shed is going to track in grass, poo and all sorts of doggy behaviors. People need to look at the total package and THINK before they buy.

Most people & breeders do NOT have the facilities to ceate a
"new" sub-species or different strain of the breed.
My thoughts are, that unless this NEW strain is recognized by a
division of the breeders community,BEWARE.
Chances are very good that if you try to breed these dogs(have
no idea of how you'd obtain petigree papers for them) that you
will end up with freaks-of-nature.,i.e.,2 ft. rear legs & 1 ft. front
front legs.,etc.
Poodles must have a domminant gene that comes out as they are seen and recognized as much as shepards and rotts are.
Stance,appeariance,coloration,stature,etc.

I think Shiht-Poo and Cocker-Doodle are funny. I thought when you mixed two different breeds together, the result was a mutt....I think that poodles are promiscuous and their owners wanted a "legitimate" offspring from their little poodle that they came up with all of these half-breed-pure-breeds...

Because you can get some really stupid names (that people think are cute) that end in poo! I don't promote breeding in an way, purebreed or not. There are just too many homeless dogs out there..........

poodles dont shed, and that usually passes on to mixed litters, because, as you said, poodle traits and genes are often dominant. many people dont like shedding animals, because it becomes a hassle, so a poodle mix is an alternative, of sorts.

Because poodles are a dime a dozen - and the majority of people attracted to the toys and miniatures treat them like babies, not dogs, and they want their cute little thing to have puppies!
