OK, I just read everyone else's answers, and to say the least, most of them suck.
He should go to court, obviously. He doesn't need a lawyer for a traffic ticket, unless he wants one, but it's not necessary. The officer, if he's in a good mood, might reduce the ticket to a lesser charge. But because it was such a high rate of speed, and given his previous driving record, the judge might either suspend/restrict his license (which means he can only drive from home to school and work only) or he might take his license away completely. If after the judge says what he thinks should happen, he can than request a trial to fight the judge's decision. At that point he'll have to get a lawyer.
yes, he should slow down, but we all do stupid things. Just tell your buddy to be polite to the officer and the judge, and hopefully one of them will take sympathy on him.

He is lucky he isn't being charged with reckless driving.
Yes, he is an idiot, and yes, he definitely needs an attorney!
The attorney can get the ticket reduced and help your friend keep his license. Not that I am sure that he needs to have a license, he sounds like a menace on the road.
Edit: And for those of you who go to court thinking the cop won't show up:
I get a two day suspension (no pay) if I miss court.
If I write you a ticket, I will be there.

He doesn't need a lawyer for traffic court, but some kind of representation may not be a bad idea. If he is found guilty his licence will be suspended. I will usually agree in traffic court to some kind of reduction of the speed when people ask, but for this high rate of speed (if it isn't bs) probably not. I may have charged him with dangerous or careless driving for that speed.

I think your friend can expect to be riding the bus for the next 6 months (or however long). Make sure he carries around some hand sanitizer and a pack of wet wipes, because the degenerates that ride the bus rarely wash their hands after a #2. It's best if he avoid all contact with them to ensure that he doesn't end up with herpes.

Well radar's don't lie... and they usually don't work if they have a problem...i would pay the ticket and go on, He would be hard pressed to get that one dropped. A lawyer probably wouldn't help. the dui most likley would't even come up in court.

First he should try to get as many continuations of the date as possible. This increases the probability of the cop not showing. Some states consider the ticket itself a deposition so that might not be good enough.
He should read these sites:
http://www.helpigotaticket.com/
http://www.tipmra.com/
http://www.ticketassassin.com/
And he should definitely get a lawyer.
If he still has insurance the cost of the lawyer will be less than the amount his insurance will go up over the next three years.

Your friend is a genius. Or maybe you are just saying its a friend when it is actually YOU. Anyway, IF he gets his license back he is going to have to try to get insurance. I would like to be in the insurance man's office to watch your friends face when he is told that he is (a) too much of a risk and cannot get insurance or (b) the rates are going to be astronomically high. Either way, it should be good comedy to watch his expression. Bring a camera to record this then put in it YouTube so the rest of us can get a good laugh!! Good luck!!

I hope he loses his license for a year at least, a year for the dui and a year for doing 85 miles over the speed limit. I hear that you can buy bus passes on a monthly basis and that will save him some money.

ouch i thought my 89 in a 55 was bad
i would get the lawyer just to get it dropped down because if you defend yourself you're not going to get it dropped down as much as you can with a lawyer, and the dui makes it look a little worse to the judge
